Anse Vata, Noumea, NC frustraaing day, missed the fair weather conditions early on as i couldnt get to my gear and had to get umungst the slalom heats in the arvo. slowly getting better at dealing with the chop. Awesome slalom today with less crashes but very close sailing. FF 122/102 R3 7m BP 37.5/35 hung around with some very talented youth sailors that reminded me of when i taught kids to sail. There is no substiute for enthusiasm and an open mind CoolLaughing

Yeah its pretty tough to adapt to the chop on the windy days, to put it in perspective the flatish area's are like shearwater but with no tide and lots more wind. Ive had to rapidly learn how to setup the board and change my stance for the conditions, didnt help that i sprained my ankle slightly falling down a small grassy verge next to the beach.

The locals are really helpful and friendly so theres lots of good advice. Cant gybe my small board (hasnt stopped me trying) in these conditions but realistically ive only had a few sails so its a work in progress. My R3 7m doesnt set properly on my freeride mast too so its becomes really overpowered very quickly, its nice when your slightly underpowered but when its 25/30 knots its hairy going over the 2/3 foot chop.

Sorry to hear your still injured mate, wont be long now :-) my fin cut took about 3 weeks to knit back up properly so you cant be too far away

Pretty amazing to watch Antoine, Piere, Mateo, Ben going over the chop in 7.8s like its not even there ... and the gybes WTF!!??

So far on the windy days the wind is 15-20 by about 11-12 oclock and then goes to 20/25 by 2:30 dropping off around 4:30 to 15-20. Best thing is that the kites are all located on another island so you dont have all that windy day kite mayhem to deal with Laughing

Hi Curt, Reading with interest your reports from New Caledonia.

I am affraid that your small Falcon is still too big ( 102L).

If you could borrow one day somathing smaller to try. Like my JP 56 Slalom ( 81L) make a huge difference on Green Island sailing.
Assuming that you have enough wind for such sinker with 7.0 or 6.2m sail.

Yeah I thought about that Pete but I wanted to try and improve my technique while i have the opportunity. The locals area amazing, i was sailing with a 17 year old on a 7.8 and 120 litre board while i was just hanging on to a 7m and 102 (the mast did suck ...but my upright stance sucked more).

After some tuning and advice i managed to get the board to fly over the chop maintaining some speed (lucky i can chop hop jump on port tack or id be screwed). Just shows how great the locals and PWA guys are. A2 did that insane distance event in 30-40 knots, 3 metre swells and massive chop using a 7.8 and 114 slalom board (or maybe a 105) .. i watched the finish from Duck Island and he passed about 200m from me fully lit up on the fin going over 3 foot chop and swell ... wow Cool

If there is any place we could download GPS data from PWA to have a look on our own GPS Results ?

It will be very interesting to see how this competitors do during the race.
