79falcon - 5m OD - 31cm pointer
I didn't enter the GPS event as my health has been a bit dicky and I have to stop after every few runs.. All I wanted was a nice gentle sail to see a new place..
I didn't get to the water till afternoon and it had kicked in. It was still a bit patchy as I was rigging and as I needed to get into the other shore ( bit protected) to rest I used the big board. I wanted to use the 6m but it wouldn't rotate ( driver error..realised the next day).. so I rigged the 6.6m..
Holy c..p!!!!!!!!!!..Survival run across keeping upwind.. The others were sitting in the shallows waiting to start the slalom. I unhooked and the rig and board were blown out of my hands downwind and I had to swim for them. Lucky everyone was upwind of me!
Poor Tibor asked me a favour but I just muttered sorry got to get back! Total bum clench survival sail back.. hanging off the rig like a gorilla weighting the windward rail so the wind couldn't get under it and using my arms a bit so I could try and get out if things went pearshaped.. Proud of myself for getting back and not losing it. No way I was bearing off so I stuck upwind to above the point and then walked it back..Heart was getting up there but no time to think about that.. Probably 20-25kts ( I usually only hold the 6.6m to about 20kts comfortabley in the chop).
Got the 2 sec on the big kit going upwind..
It kicked in more and I rigged the small gear ( hoping it wouldn't get patchy again). I've never used a pointer with the 79 falcon and haven't used it in chop for ages.. Not the sort of sesion to pay much attention to details..
Out again and holy c..p!!!!! again..The small board was so fast in the chop..I had the go pro on and I expect there will be some interesting language....Of course if looks flat with the fisheye lens..
I had a rest over the other side and then took a while to get going in the patchy wind with a brown pants run back..Lucky I only tried the one as it dropped back to 15kts or less so I would have got stuck out there if I had gone out again. That was the problem the wind was so up and down you couldn't really rig for it..
I could have used my 4m and 68ltre waveboard on the last run..
Well I only did 2 runs..but I survived healthwise and although I had my hands full and didn't have time to have much fun in retrospect it was a session I will remember for a long time.. . I'm looking forward to laughing at the go pro footage. I thought I taped both runs but stuffed up and missed the one on the bigger board..
The others were off doing the slalom in pretty hary conditions!
