Fantastic wild day. We had everything from SW to West. While we were rigging it was perfect angle and sand streaming off the dunes. I think we all missed that. Then the wind eased and started swinging around a bit. Hard to get a good run. Plently of 38's but no 40's. Had a really wild squall come throught at direct West. 35-40 but chop over a foot high down the bank. After that the wind died right back but soon started to build again and went back WSW eventually. I was experimenting with a different mast and radically different set in the 5.2m Koncept. It looked good in the beach, but it didnt feel that great and I could not get any speed out of it. So in the Lull I walked back and picked up my already rigged 4.7m, which was a lot quicker and easier than rerigging the 5.2m on the standard mast. The 4.7 was looking fantastic anyhow and I wanted to try it.
Just after the tide bottomed out. the wind swung back to WSW, the water went flat and it was gusting over 30Kts. Perfect timing for the 4.7m
The first fully powered run was fantastic. Sail felt great and speed was there. Had peak of 43.3 for nearly a second. But no speed on the GW60 which had run out of battery. None on the GPS-Logit phone either which I think is kaput from getting damp when the catch sprung on my armband holder. Just as well I had two GW-52's in the helmet!
Had three more runs over 40, but was flying blind now so didnt know that until I got home.
I lot of sailors there thoday, coming out of the woodwork! Great to see. Quite a few of the visitors gave up just before the conditions go good. You need measured patience to get a good result here sometimes. Most of the PiT Crew were there to the end, when the tide was rushing in. The wind was gusting to 40 and the angle was good with flat surface, but the inrushing tide was creating whoopdedoos and making it hard to get speed again. Besides being completely stuffed, it was time to get out to beat the tide anyhow.
Walking back towards the end I saw Ado coming down the course just as a 35+ knot squall hit. Yeeharring as he sped past and disappeared in the cloud of sand. That was a good one! He was on the front of the squall and it just got stronger as I stood there. Smoke on the water and sand to head level. Definitly over 40 for a minute or two then! Two hands to hold onto the sail!
Fantastic to see most of the old PiT crew and some new ones out, and the Mallacoota chapter going hard.
More days like this please!
CA40, Tribal 16.5cm assy, and 2019 KA Koncept Proto at first. Best runs on 2019 KA Koncept speed 4.7m CA40 with 18cm Tribal assy. 16.5 was too small today. 18cm made quite a difference.
