3 hours ago Christchurch Estuary, NZ ..Went out a bit too soon in the low flooding tide (22cm weed fin in my board) ..regretted it within minutes! ..Got to the other side, started to gybe, checked inside the turn and saw a kitesurfer in my 10 oclock, instinctively opened up the arc to run deeper downwind and instantly got chucked over the nose. The water was deep enough, but I'd hit a very dense patch of floating weed that grabbed and stopped my 50 swept fin dead. Even though I was unhooked the fall was still very unpleasant - my neck is still sore now, think I've got whiplash.
In retrospect, have to say the water and weed state are a great deal more treacherous in the low flooding tide than in the low receding tide (for similar water depths) ..Should have had my Tribal 16 in, might have got away with it with that - reckon the blunter leading edge helps negate the grabbing effect of tough weed.
