3529 days ago Boombas with Captain Calm and Pepe. The morning started a bit on the dodgy side with the wind forecast being downgraded. But I could hear the Black Dog having a bit of a snuffle behind the gate so I thought I would go for a drive to Boombas to take in the country side. When I got there Pepe was already rigging and the breeze was probably low teens in the gusts. Good enough to go for a splash. I was just getting sorted when the school rang to tell me youngest snotgobbler is in the sick bay and can I come and get her. I truly love my kids but with timing like that i felt had enough to be a little frustrated to say the least. I rang my wife to let her knoiw the situation and then the holes in the cheese aligned - wonderful wifey offered to pick up the fruit of my loins.. Forever grateful.
So into the drink went the QEII with Koncept 8.5 and DeltaHoneycomb24 dowel pinned in place. I had put on my new boom front end yesterday and i was keen to give it a whirl. The keenness sort of wore off pretty quickly when it went crack and snap on my first run. Unbelievable. Another boom bust! Luckily ,closer inspection revealed it was just the lever, so i nursed it for the rest of the morning session and survived ok. The wind had peaked mid morning and was starting to drop so I began edging back to the cars for a spot of nourishment. I passed over an area that was light coloured, not the usual weed and there was a hell of a bump on rock and my Delta is now 1.5 cm shorter.
Pas had warned about the rock and now I can say I found it. So I arrived at camp with broken boom and fin. However the water conditions were so nice that I was still as happy as a pig in mud. It really is a magic spot on a N - NW breeze. In an unusual piece of forward thinking I had packed back up boom number three.. It's an old Gun ally. Gotta love the Germans. This thing is made from bits from old Panzer tanks. Compared to my carbon booms this felt like a heavy monster, but indestructible.
And so the afternoon passed with run after run across the bay. Pepe had told me that his wife had called his board Cinderella. So I was trying to stay close to Pepe to see it change into a pumpkin, hopefully when he was nicely powered up. I felt sure this was going to be funny.
Unfortunately his board didn't turn into a pumpkin. Pepe went in with board still looking disappointingly non vegetable like. I was left with Captain Calm and the two of us had a great time enjoying the water.I gybed a few really nicely, but didn't manage to do it in enough wind to really get it happening coming out the other side. However given the light breeze i was really happy with the results. The quick file, sand and smooth of my Delta had worked fine (Thanks Captain Calm) and I I sailed until I felt I might have run out of brownie points.
I very rarely say this, but a definitely a Top Ten Fangy day.
