we'll get killed later in the season, gets too cold down here to sail much after May....and the wind tends to disappear during winter, but in the meantime we have the norwesters starting up, just great in our high country lakes, heaps of wind and always gusty. Plus spectacular scenery.

Our local estuary is flat at low tide, windy most summer days but rarely gets more than 25 knots of wind so hard to go quick. The best flat local spot is Lake Clearwater which is a high country lake 160km from town. Its a beautiful place , snow capped mountains, a lot of lakes in the area and hot in summer with a hot thermal nor west wind which often gets too strong to sail, so we have plenty of 30-40 knot sessions there. We sail up against the top bank of the lake and get about 250 metres sheltered dead flat water then off into the chop at 40+....., exciting and we crash plenty! We've also just discovered the perfect, dead flat speed spot only 30km from town on another local lake and we are just working on the access question with the Maori Iwi who own the lake. We reckon this place will be good for 45+ if we can get to sail on it. Many of the local lakes don't allow sailing, just fishing.
