Hi Kato,

Sailing spot is Lake Clearwater, one of our high country lakes, right in the middle of the south island, south west of Christchurch.

Neil W has some images somewhere on the site......

many local windsurfers have holiday baches (cribs?) or caravans up there and spend much of the summer up there.

Its at 2000 ft altitude ,  fresh water and low air pressure and it gets cold about this time of year, but I reckon we will be ok for another 3 or 4 weeks before its too bad to sail.

Lake is in a valley so the nor'west winds get funnelled and we get 30 -50 knots pretty regularly in spring and autumn.

The bottom is coated with weed which makes for a nice soft landing when crashing, very safe place. The weed is also a good baffle and it gets flat when the water level drops late in summer.

Northern bank is sheltered and gets wind on the good days and is nice and flat but nearly always gusty, interesting trying to read the gusts and be in the right place at right time.

We (local club)  plan to run a week long speed event up there next November and you Aussie fellas are all welcome to get over here and try some high altitude, high speed.

Lake Clearwater

Lake Clearwater-top of lake

Probably snowing up at the lake at present Mike, its snowing in Methven which is only at 300m above sea level. That should drop the water temp by a few degrees!!!. Might have to loosen the straps and wear bootees.
