Port Beach with James and Slowy - who was hooning!

I got there late and it was howling - rigged the 5.7 and blasted out on the Manta 49. Was getting worked but it moderated fairly abruptly after that and became patchy but still very good fun.

The port beach sausage rocks! Picked up my new 7m this morning so had to give it a crack today. Wow. Rigged with a 430 to handle the chop and gusts a bit easier. It was quite windy. The wind picked up for a patch when Ado turned up. About that time James and I were getting smashed on the 7ms. Very tricky to gybe outside and way overpowered coming into the run duw to the 1m+ steep faces to negotiate. The strangest feeling is going fast in 1m lumps of wind swell. The sausage mostly filters off the steep parts of the waves. But its pretty gusty behind there and the best line is quite a way off it to get the wind. Was a lot of hit and miss with the gusts. Most runs were overpowered on the entry then nothing on the run. I got one lit for a few seconds for a 39.67 on the dial. Got another couple of 39s and some 38s. Loads of seaweed around so used a 26cm 30deg speed/slalom fin I made. SP53. Nice to be back on the water.

quick session at melville after work. nothing remarkable.. too gusty. was happy with the alpha though; if I didnt get a lull on the exit it would have been 24ish. Hopefully will improve that pb next time at hardies..

spewing i came unhooked.. was looking pretty good for a nm pb that miseed but a few 100m's.. oh well on holidays now and will be able to go further that eli point in search of pb's.

lots of talk lately about alphas so i decided to try and crank some out...

having done that...

heres a dilema that may or may not create some discussion-

i carried 2 gps's today 1x gt31 and 1x gt11

the trackpoint data off the gt11 gave me a top alpha of 27.489

in total 3x 27plus and 7 x 26 plus

the doppler alpha from the gt 11 was 26.92- within .02 of the gt31!

the gt 31(all doppler) gave a top alpha of 26.934 (as posted)

in total it recorded 6 alphas all 26kn plus with a 25 plus being the 11th fastest for the day

needless to say which one should i post given that a LOT! of sailors still use the gt 11 and as such are posting the recommended trackpoint data!

the conditions where preety good given that the wind was 25kn gusting to 30

the water state was flat but not as flat as usual, there was lots of weed floating creating a sort of slalom couse to sail through

(not to mention a resident stingray that looked to be a meter in diameter and swimming around with his tail in the air!!)

all of the gybes where done in water that didnt reach my knee in depth with some of the exits having me bouncing across the bottom!

all the gybes where done in on shore winds.

Awesome Slowboat! Maybe we need to get hold of 500m of the stuff and set it up somewhere even windier!

I reckon Ado missed the best of it- just. I went back to the car when he turned up since my paper cut needed redressing and I was getting cramps on every run. So I rehydrated and patched up the paper cut, and was back up there 30 minutes later. The wind had definitely backed off and seemed to have clocked around to the south (as it does there). Best i could manage was a 36 wanting more gas... The run home was fun!

Snides,

I get the same results all the time myself using GT11 and GT31 together. Same readings for both whether in doppler or positional, but with the positional reading usually 0.6 kts faster. And an even bigger advantage if you get those positional gybes with saw teeth in the middle of the track (and I wonder how many of those get entered in results?)

Seems to be an unnecessary advantage to GT11 users all round. Time for an update on the regs?

Awesome numbers, Steve. That is an amazing alpha.

Personally I think all doppler units should post doppler alphas GT11 and 31.

Good to see you back on the water Slowboat with your usual ridiculous speeds!

Snides,

Congrats on a superb Alpha - I reckon the Alpha division is a great indication of sailing ability (only because it's my highest individual ranking Wink

Also maybe a few of you guys at the upper echelons need a pow wow to decide on the fairest rules for Alpha recordings - as you mentioned it can be manipulated greatly between unit models and TP vs Doppler.  If you'd only worn your GT-11 I gather logging your 27+kn TP alpha would be within the rules.

GREAT gybe Snides - probably the fastest "Doppler" alpha in the rankings! Wink

The first 27 knot alpha in WA can't be far away. Will it be at Woodies or Hardies or somewhere else?

Also, Slowy will be lining up for the first 40 at "Supertubes" - the new spot - it aint for the feint-hearted.

Fun times ahead!

Well done snides, I knew you had at least a 26, but that is smoking. Thought your worries about going too wide were unfounded, (or have you got a 27kt at 60m?)

As you say doppler versus trackpoint, it does seem unfair, if the 2 units give the same results. my 25.66 in trackpoints comes back to a 24.99 in doppler. The main difference being the acceleration out of the gybe.

I suggest, we should start using doppler for all GTs on all divisions next year.

cheers guys a 27.22 doppler alpha was less than 2 board lengths away (54m)..dohh

the  11 gave a 27.838 @ 60m

Ado i am certain 40 plus was on the cards for the guns yesterday at  hardies!!

i basically had 1 bare off (38.2 something) after jet informed me of the potential at the bottom end of 'A' land and it was 1 of those effortless type of runs as well...

so i am sure you guys would have smoked 40's plus there yesterday..i dont think any of the other guys bore off down there other than

Jet and I..

looking forward to having a go at alphas at woodys on my preffered tack.

is anyone else sick of all this wind??Tongue out...Wink

decrep, i have missed so many down there that i dont expect them any more..its very difficult as u know to judge where you are

as the coast (in bound ) all looks the same so no landmarks and the outbound run has you trying to fix on a landmark 9k's awayUndecided

a set of bouys that are fairly mobile are the go

that would beat using  a seagull as a gauge thats standing on a bit of snot- for judging proximity...you never know if the buggers have flown to another snot lump after you have gybed!!Undecided

Pete, not long at all, and there is no wind right next to it - you have to bear away. It's probably about 300m at a guess?

It's a bit of fun, it's very weird and it's something different.
