Went down to Inverloch for a sail with Jerry, Evan and George. Rigged the old faithly setup. The wind was a bit up and down and the water was bit choppy for any real speed. But was fun. The last trip with Adventra. Next time with the new van. I look foward to more trips with the new van and with the crew. Might need to bring down a portable BBQ next time.

Inverloch - outer channel. Sailing with Jman, Windrider & George. Started of ok, nicely powered with some flat sections for a bit of speed. After an hour or so wind went a bit marginal. Continued sailing but mostly under powered for the rest of the day.

Ok day at Inverloch, rigged to small, over estimated the strength of the wind, was never really powered up on the 5.8.  Ended up putting the 7.0 up but we were having trouble finding a nice line to sail on the out going tide.

LOCATION: AREA 45

WIND : SW- SSW- 15-20 kts

SAILORS:  OLD SALTY, MOONDO

GEAR:  JP Excite Ride 135, Mean 36cm fin, NP Excess 5.9 up to 6.9

DESCRIPTION.

Great session @ Area 45.  High tide in the morning lead to more chop than a Jackie Chan film!

However, for some reason, once you got past the spit, the water flattenned right off (even though the spit was submerged).

In the late arvo the tide turned and the bank was exposed....fantastic run down along it for about 300-350 metres then a great big flat area to build speed for about another 150 metres.

Doug and Simon experimented with the mud bank and got some great speed.

Good to know that this joint can hold a SW...a totally stoked session!

Best sail for a long time even though results do not show it.  Area 45 Beautiful long runs evidenced in the little difference b/w 5*10 and 2 sec peak.

LAte morning 18 - 20 kts High tide F2 SX med MFC36 Tush 5.5.  Set harness lines short and wider apart and has helped enormously with spinout.  Water was a little lumpy max 10" with a few small waves (12 - 15")which was great to surf down

After lunch wind dropped to 12 - 15kts Tide running out Mistral 144 Tush 7.5 MFC 37 Well what can I say Area 45 came into its own.  There was a section where you came out of lump onto Sandy Point smooth water but there was no sand spit out of the water as yet. Uncanny.  Late afternoon when the tide was fully out the wind had dropped but that did not disappoint as arms where out of the sockets by then.  Exposed many sand spits on so many different angles over a wide expanse of water.  This spot is going to work on many wind directions.  Just have to get there on low tide and good wind.  Sailed with Drift and Moondo and at one time we each had a sand spit to ourselves that we where rocketing down.  Would have looked good from shore.  Now I just have to concentrate on bearing away to increase my speed.  Next time  Really happy with the tush 7.5

PSST Do not tell Kato Area 45 works on a SSW

Nice going on those pb's! Pity the wind didn't show up as forecasted but still good to get on the water with a few of the guys.

Good stuff guys, would have loved to be there but had to attend our traditionally yearly BBQ with friends (and 1000 kids). Congrats on the PBs WindRider. Count me in next time!

Well done on the PB's Steve, i think we made the most of the the conditions today, I thought with a forcast of 20 to 30 we would of got a bit more than 15 to 20.

Well done guys, good speeds for the outer channel.

we had a blast @ area 45...we had a bit of a drop in breeze, but only for about 15-20 minutes and then it came in and stayed solid SW-SSW 15-20 knots.

Well done Mick with those pb's. Nice distance especially. Any chance of seeing a google map overlay of your days sailing.... curious to see. Have attached the image of my days sailing. Note how much the sandbars have changed!

Damit Jerry, I can't believe you beat me on distance...... yet again. Nice Alpha!

Old Salty,

That's surprising with your speeds..you certainly looked quicker than that!.  You did spend a fair bit of time blazing new trails though!!!

My peak and 5 X 10 came on that long run I had while you guys were mucking around on the inside of the spit.

What  can't get over is the consistency....ie line up the spit, put the foot down and take off!!!...not once but EVERY SINGLE RUN!!!Cry

Hey Mick

Yeah I was more interested in finding what angles worked against what sand spits rather than bearing away down wind.  Choices choices choices!!  Great to see your peak was up there and we both covered a FEW kms.  Funny how it was a pb for you and me on the kms whereas if we had been at the Inlet I doubt if we would have got that.

Doug,

How do you think the wind strength compares at 45 on a sw? I always find the wind is stronger the closer you get to the entrance, thats why we ended up sailing at the outer channel, sounds like you had better runs anyway even if it was lighter air.

Evan,

That dose not look like where we were sailing yesterday Surprised

It's really changed (the sandbars). When I first looked at it I thought it must have made a mistake somehow. But I remember making runs down towards the pier in the afternoon, which is correct on that overlay. Everthing has moved to the right - the deep channel on the map is now where the sandbar is.

Jerry - Moondo brought along a mini weather station so I am pretty confident that the figures Drift and I mentioned where an accurate summary of the day.  Be interested to know what you thought wind strength was at the Inlet.  AT 45 the wind had holes in it but they where not big enough that you could not plane through them.  Actually one of the IWC members has a weather station at his house on the Inlet - we may be able to get a better idea on this.

Evan - you should be able to find out the date the image was taken by Google of the Inlet - it certainly is a moving feast.

Sounds similar in strength to what we had at the mouth. Sue recorded 17 knots on the wind meter just before I headed out in the morning. It felt about 18.... to maybe 20 on the water. 6.5m Ezzy was just starting to get a big back hand heavy in the gusts, though I didn't have max outhaul or downhaul. After lunch, 13-15 knots.

Can't seem to find what date the google maps were taken on. Somebody said in conversation not so long ago around 06-07

Next time I will go up and check out Area 45. We should try it out to compare spots for speed etc.

Steve,

I cannot see a reason for me to sail anywhere but Area 45 at the moment.  The Inlet has become too short for my liking.  The only issue I can see that will take me back to the Inlet is if no one else is sailing with me at Area 45.  Gets a bit spooky as it is a little isolated.  Currently we know it works E, ESE and SW, SSW.

Doug,

From last Sunday's session the runs were very short and with not much flat sections to crank it up in the inlet. I have done as well on Port Philip bay with big swells to help with creating a flat run. The small chop never really allows the board to settle. I agree Area 45 is a must to try. You guys seem to be doing well there.

Doug, does it also work on W? I think I remember someone saying that it's not, but I'm not so sure. If so, next weekend is some heavier westerly airstream forecast and I wouldn't mind to go down and join you.

Old Salty

VIC
Australia
5379 days ago

Juergen,

I have heard one or two say it will not work on a westerly but Mick and I have not tried it.  Mick has a theory that it will not work but looking at the sand spits  am not too sure.  I reckon there is a big sand spit in the middle that will work well on a westerly.  Anyway Mick and I are committed to trialling it in all directions to get a better picture so bring on a westerly is what I say.

i did have a theory that a Westerly might be too square but Old salty is right..we've been surprised at the flexibility in terms of the wind direction that 45 can handle...the only way to know is to get wet!!!!

I'm certainly up for going down if it's worth it. The forecast is all over the place, changes every day. Does anyone know what's happening?
