GPS Team Challenge - Pinnaroos (WA, Australia)

Lots of kiters near the rock groyne meant we couldn't get into the shallow water - but still reasonably flat in close near the plant site - good that kiters and windsurfers can share the venue.

My jibing is cactus - feel like a pensioner going through the turns..... I know a bad sport blames his tools - but my weedy had different ideas to me on changes in direction - something to work on.....I ended up swapping over to my fav 30 fin in pure frustration at my laughable turns.

The day didn't start off too well - I unrolled my sail to find a horizontal tear in the mono between 2nd and 3rd top batten - thanks to the kiter who gave me some tape. Despite the setbacks I reckon Woodies rocks in a SSWer.

Decided to keep Birdman company at Woodies.

Usual horrible chop out the back but some nice water on the inside. I went for a bunch of alphas and thought I got some good ones but stuffed the proximity on them all!!! Not even close (70-80m)

Nmile has a gybe in it.

Overall a good session.

Lovely 5.0 day, Mettams to Sorrento. Great to see the new members getting stuck in. Still jealous of your +30 knots birdman ! Mark you make it sound like Nm with a gybe is unusual - mine has one as well (stopped doing those 1 mile out to sea runs once I got a GPS and realised how far it would be to swim in).

Just having fun today. Good to get out on the water after such a long break. Wasn't feeling adventurous enough to go to Woodies. I mostly just practiced gybing today. Amazing to get 4PB's!!!

Between you and I we did well with the PB's Birdman!

I'll have to get you guys to teach me how to go fast. And how to gybe without falling off! (I wrote this before reading your post birdman!)

There are only two rules in Alpha Racing:

1. You must get back to a previous position, the position being within a known tolerance. Because it is not always easy to know exactly where you have been or on what line you sailed into the gibe, a tolerance needs to be applied in the calculations. The term for this tolerance is the Proximity Distance. This proximity distance is specified to allow for slight errors of judgement in location.

This can be used to your advantage if you can judge your location accurately. It means that on the return leg you can get a better average speed by sailing slightly downwind of your original path. But don't overdo it or the run will not count! This will also help to avoid accidents or aggravation when there are many sailors sharing the same piece of water. If you are sailing in open water with no nearby landmarks to use, then on your return leg it might be better to cross over your incoming path within the maximum distance to ensure you have at least one valid result for that run.

2. All results must have a total distance covered that is less than or equal to the maximum distance. The software will only calculate results achieved where the total distance covered from start to return is less than or equal to the maximum distance. If you cover too much distance before returning to your original path, the software will not produce a result. To avoid the chance of a lost result, it is best to return close to your original path before you have achieved the full distance.

No other rules are necessary. As long as you are on a sailboard you can do whatever you like within these two constraints. You can gybe multiple times, you can cross your path multiple times, sail upwind and downwind, you can even tack! Whatever you like.

There are currently three proposed divisions defined as follows:

aRacing 500 - Maximum distance of 500m, Proximity distance of 50m

Well done on the PB's Anita and Birdman!!! I share your thoughts on gybing weedfins... need to be very gentle with back foot pressure until the rail is engaged.

Mark, 26knot Nm is bloody quick with a gybe. Awesome.

Looks like a good day all round. I decided to have a bit of a wave sail, mainly to keep my speed gear dry (and light) for my trip over to Victoria...already looking at excess baggage...

Great stuff Anita and Birdman!

Nice to see you enjoying Woodies Birdman. It's my favourite place to sail in the metro area, and is great for the 2 sec, 5x10 and alpha categories (all my PB's in those categories have been set at Woodies). I usually run a pointer when sailing the north side of the point, the weed is only really a problem if you're sailing the 'skate park' south of the point.

Nice hour and mile for Woodies Mark. Shame about the alphas.
