Mineral (4665km): Lucky Bay, Tabou 136, choco weed fin and 2nd hand 2011 KA 7.1 race sail. Tuning mostly for the KA race, ex Jesper Orth. No probs with this sail I can say that for sure. Don't think I had to pump the sail once in a gusty Autumn breeze. Still coming to grips with it, as I haven't used a cam sail much prior to today, other than my old Severn 2 cam 8.5 Only draw back is the bloody thing is heavy to gybe. I could get around but bugger up the sail flip due to the unusual weight. But in a straight line its very stable.
Grumpy (8011km): Nice session on the river. Was trying for a nm but couldn't get a solid run. 7.3 Loft SB, 101is, 36 Talon, Melville Beach, WA, AU
JJ (25827km): Glory Holes, Australind, WA, AU Good call by Lao to make the trip south although I probably missed the best squalls. When I got on the water at 3 it was pretty calm then it came in at a gusty 10 to 25 knots. A nice easy place to sail, I couldn't find any real flat spots but the chop was pretty manageable. Good to see so many out. Isonic 86, Hot Sails GPS 6.6, Black Project Weed Speed 28

Pointman (25563km): Late arvo sesh at Melville. On the water @ 4 with the Futura 111 + 8.4 TR8 + 42 Canefire. First half hour on this combo, but the breeze was too patchy for the 111, so I switched to the 135 Patrik + 48 Talon. Had a ball. No epic speeds, but some nice long runs and well powered up at times. I'm loving my new big board. Heaps of crew out for a pretty good westerly, once I switched to the 135 I was pretty much planing the whole time. Cheers Daz for the post-sesh bevvies, they went down a treat .
lao shi (41082km): Great afternoon down in Bendyland! JJ and a bunch of the Manbramob. Loft Racing Blade 6.3, Lurch, banshee 24 Got down to Glory Holes to see Stroppo rigging a 5.9 and Elmo a 6.2! There had been not much wind on the way down until Myalup. Decided to rig the 6.3 and it performed admirably the whole day. About my third run was a big white out squall for the best speed of the day. Headed up to the top end of the inlet and the wind disappeared and a very slow slog back to base followed. Benefit of 80L is that this is still possible. Wind kicked back in and had a go at a few more naughties but never lit the whole way. Final part of the day was runs across the boat ramp and nice chase the gust bear aways in to shore. I only finished refairing Lurch the day before due to a slight negative in front of the fin box. Turned in to a bit of a nightmare as the rails are tucked and the board has a small single concave which made trying to get levels right a real pain. Verdict: seemed to feel like it accelerated better but I just could not get it past 34.8 in the last session despite tweaks and even 5kg weight at the end so the jury is still out. However the set up was rock solid through the small chop and had great fun just chasing gusts often getting 2/3 bear aways in one run. That is the problem with this game is that your expectations keep getting higher. Not so long ago I would have been delighted with those speeds in water that wasn't flat. Ther best bit about Glory Holes is just the space to sail where you want rather than be stuck on a run. Great to see Stroppo and Crasher smashing out runs! Watch out WA rankings. |
