Yarralumla, ACT, AU. Nice short session on LBG. Well done Akim and Brian.

Lake Burley Griffin. Happy session with Akim and Pete. Gusty NW and 40 degrees temperature. The 2-sec speed was the result of being in the right place at the right time - there's a place on the lake where the wind funnels round a point and into smooth water. Still looking for that little bit extra to achieve 30 knots. Smile

I've been to sandy point and burrum with speed boards and cambered sails but I get a speed PB on LBG using a 5.3, Severne S-1 .

Have you speed guys read the seabreeze forum regarding the lightest rig?

Cambers are just dead weight, but I guess the speed guys don't worry about dead weight as they probably have 20 or 30kg of it compared to me at 64kg.Surprised

When 2 old and wise sailers of Lake Burley Griffin both get PB's on the same day you know the conditions must have been special!

Funny I thought it was pretty crappy.

-but thats the challenge of Canberra, every gust is different, very different.Every gust is a fight. For me linking the gusts and planning continuously without schlogging is the challenge-it's way harder than it sounds.

It was very challenging, very hot and very FUN

Well done Brian, Well done Akim. Pbs on LBG. After you've been away a little longer Akim you'll even better recall that LBG is petty good on a good day.  I went out to catch the moderating southerly buster at Peggies late yesterday, in a hurry didn't strap on the GPS. Pity, the wind, tide and swell was perfect for speed, I'm sure it would have been a pb for me in my new age category.

Does anyone know what the fastest 2 second is for LBG? Akim, 33.74 would have to be close.

it's the fastest 2sec out of the 150 odd uploads from Yarralumla on Ka72

Hey Pete, Ian has done about 3 knots faster than my best speed.

Brian, I got all excited when I saw a PB for you, then I saw I had one too! Hang on I didn't wear a GPS today.I'm expecting that 30 soon.

remember what Ian told me-wait upwind of the yellow sign for a big one, don't be tempted by the first decent gust.

You've got a good memory Akim.  It was way back in 2007, just found it on GPS-speedsurfing

http://www.gps-speedsurfing.com/?mnu=user&val=23706&uid=905   It's been converted to kph, 67.78. but was a 2 sec of 36.59 knots, so just under 3 knots above yours. Laughing  it was just on the back of a trip to Sandy Point so I was a little bit desensitised to fear.  It's a while since I've been that fast, but I'll claim it at 36.59.

16th Oct 2007.

Sorry to get you stirred up for nothing, Akim. No, haven't beaten that January session. I did sail LBG yesterday evening. A benign easterly, and was doing some reasonable speeds, given the actual wind strength (fastest was 23.7 knots 2 secs. wind about 16 knots, according to BOM @ airport). Sailed until after dark, which was fun. Eventually wind died and forced me off the water.

Using Cribby's hints - "arshe!", long lines - made a difference, so still hoping to hit 30. Yes, will retire the 130, and baptise the "pro 122" at next big wind event, and also stalk that elusive gust off the "submarine cable warning" sign.

Cheers, Brian

nice work guys.  LBG on a NW is a tough sail, but when those bullet gusts come through...

It was the 1 in 100 year gust Pete, I was at the yellow submarine sign on a big gust that turned to huge as it swung to the south west. Have never sailed fully powered into such flat water. Then I was becalmed, behind Black Mt peninsula, in the spot that westerlies don't get to. I had to swim to the island, carry my gear across and sail back to Yarralumla bay. My second best speed on LBG is way down on that,  I'll give 2nd ever fastest to Akim.
