2314 days ago South Yunderup - Boombas run with Swindy. First up, i am too lazy to type all the location too often so I am just going to abbreviate it to Yun-bas.
Second, massive kudos to Swindy who was a man on a mission today and forgot to pack his self-preservation gene kit and was absolutely charging to get his hour.... Story below.
By the time I got to Yun-bas, Swindy was already on-site and doing circle work in the grass, thinking he was walking in a straight line. After a quick discussion on rigging, I decided to whack up the Koncept 6.6, Barge, FF24 combo, on the basis that it’s a long way back if the wind drops out and you are underdone on volume. I probably should have gone with the little Windtech as I was either powered or overpowered the whole time and struggling with the Barge a bit. ( Actually, I should get off my arse and pick up my Missy Flow from Remery as it would have been ideal ).
Swindy left the shore as a squall came through and simply disappeared going South at a serious clip. I didn’t realise how brave/stupid he was until I followed him a little while later. The tide was perfect and the water unbelievably flat in places. This also meant it was shallow in places and I didn’t ever make it past the island without clipping the bottom and grinding to a halt. Apparently, Swindy made it out the first time, but on the way back in decided to launch himself over the handlebars by getting overzealous with his plough.
Once past the island, it was kilometres of flat water. The only problem was there were enough serious weed burgs to take out the Titanic. I spent a couple of runs trying to find a good path, but regardless of where I went, there were enough sphincter tightening moments for me to wimp out and never really put the power down. The really big bergs were like islands, but the ones that were just subsurface, that you could not see, were the problem. Even my trusty FF24 got snagged heavily enough on some of the bergs to make the session an adrenaline-fuelled ride between exhilaration and terrifying sphincter moments.
The outside run was the worst as the outer bergs are always the heaviest. I had decided to do several passes just to the lee of some of the big ones, thinking that the water would be clear of weed. I got that bit badly wrong.
Swindy appeared to be doing runs closer to shore, so I decided to follow him in, all the while a little unsure if I was going to run out of water. It turned out that the close shore run was the least weedy and consequently the least smooth.
About halfway between the shore and outer bergs was the Goldilocks zone and Swindy had the pedal down, back and forth, like a metronomic man possessed. I am really keen to see what his Hour score was, as to me it looked like he was hitting PB territory.
I was only able to fit a shortish session in time-wise, but I was getting tired from being overdone anyway, so I headed back just as the hour ticked over. I didn’t have the right combo today, but given the chance on a smaller board and fin, along with some bigger cojones, it would have been one of the best winter sessions at Yun-bas I have had, but instead, it was just a Top Ten Fangy Weed burg festival of fun.
