1491 days ago 2 categories Coodanup, WA, AU Saw there was wind and the last for some time so headed down with the vauge idea it could be a distance day. On arrival there was a twitcher with the largest telescopic camera ever...a good one meter long and 20 cm dia. She sat in the car most of the time then got out every so often to point this thing at a bird and then get back in. Wind was good but instead of heading to the pond like planned I did laps directly in front of her as didn't want photos of me heading to the pond. She was just watching me as never got out of the car again. Who would crack first, the wind, the twitcher or me...after what seemed an eternity she moved her vehicle 10 meters and sat there again..eventually then took off. I carried on for a few laps in case she was testing me then headed for the pond. As expected wind was much better in the pond and cruised around heading upwind and experimenting with the 360 GoPro on backback pole mount. No one was hiding in the bird hide but a couple appeared on the lookout but were disinterested in me and left.
Decided I had enough footage so jumped off and switched off the 360 (I have remote but it doesn't work very well). Started the older GoPro and continued. Suddenly spied two dolphins upwind so headed for them. Damm, I should have left the 360 running as this was precisely why I got it. Anyway, got close and was travelling slowly, the dolphins noticed me then proceeded to swim back and forth checking me out, swimming directly underneath, around..me trying to keep the gopro aimed at them. Got to the sandfire bank, jumped off to start the 360 and they hung around for a bit but of course as soon as had other camera running they were gone. Kept both cameras running doing laps but they were no where to be seen. After 1/2 hour or so spotted them fishing near the entry point so headed towards them. Once there there were now at least 5 dolphins fishing in two packs/pods with fish flying everywhere...at one point I went between these two groups who were both fishing but they were completely disinterested in me then they disappeared for good. Ran both gopros till dead in the off chance they would appear again.
Now I had the opposite problem of yesterday, instead of freezing I was literally cooking in this wetsuit and wishing I was in my lighter one. Thankfully I didn't buy a full 5mm steamer like recommended. The wind was still blowing 14 knots in the car park when I left but I called it quits due to heat. In hind sight I probably timed it fairly well as wind dropped off fairly close to when I departed. 120 Tabou Rocket, 8.6 Severne Turbo M4, 28FF (still untouched)
