5m gator - WT57 ( 90ltres) - 24cms WT weedy
then 85ltre WT waveboard
Impossible to rig for . Character building.
I was unenthused about rigging. When I arrived I was the only one , it was cold with light rain and the wind was a patchy 10 -23kts SW.
When I finally decided to rig I went to checkout conditions and saw my shark friend cruising past 100m out on his way to Coal point. ..More waiting and a few wingers arrived and the wind settled in a bit.
I was hoping it would swing as the more S it gets , the more consistent the wind and ' waves'. It stayed SW-SSW. all day.
It was good for a SWer but still horrible and I was on the wrong combo all day.
I rigged 5m for the gusts ( 22kts when I rigged ) but they increased to 20-25kt plus. I used the 90ltre for the lulls but it was too big and fast for the gusts and steep messy chop.
The waveboard was too small for the lulls and with the 5m sail still scary in the gusts and steep chop. I needed a 4m sail for the gusts but it would have been too small generally.
First run out on the 90 I got a big gust and went for a bearaway. The wind got under the board and it lifted close to 90 degrees to the water..I decided to be really careful in the gusts after that but they were the only time I got going.
Changed to the waveboard but there was still mega overpowered , unhooked bum clench rides upwind through the ramps trying to stay on the water. In the lulls I was trying to stay upright.
The annoying thing was the wings were having a ball and handling the 15-18kt windrange easily.
It died to 10-14kts so I rigged the big 112ltre and went out with the 5m..too small. I needed a 7m. I didn't trust it so rigged the 5.7m and of course it kicked back in to 20-25kts plus.
I went out at 12 . By 3pm I finally had some fun when it kicked in enough to get the waveboard going pretty consistently although I was still in survival mode in the gusts. Plenty of bearaways expecting to get catapulted and to get 26 /27kts, but of course being a waveboard, it was more like 23kts.
I got one gybe all session. I was either trying to stay upright in the lulls or too overpowered to try in the gusts . I just played it safe and dropped into the water , turned the board and waterstarted.
I can see why I used to go to Budgy in patchy strong conditions.
It was 25-30kts as I derigged and a few young kids went out on the wings. One got a 20ft jump and was blown downwind 50ft before he crashed. Lucky for the leashes or he would have lost his gear. He kept going for it though.
About 6 wingers and Paul on the foil although it was too much for him.
