Coodanup, WA, AU CA63 LRB5.6 Pepe 17 Sunny moderate breeze. With the occasional fresh gust, less than yesterday during the time I was on the water. Low tide flat water. A cruisy session and not as many people as yesterday. Still good fun..

easy sailing in light winds and smoooth water. Good company as well.

Another fun day at Fangys, lighter than yesterday, so a bit slower.

Used the same gear, 60cm board 5.7 speed and 19cm@55.

Went for some alpha practice, still having a bit of trouble getting going again after the gybe.

Thought Fangy had a fin fail, but suspect he was just changing fins. left a bag tied to the grumpy nuts post.

Found out my fitness isn't improving, was starting to get tired after 15km, so called it.

I want to recover for Thursday.

Coming home from my morning Tightarse Tuesday petrol run, I saw Rob was already on the water. Honestly, I am beginning to wonder if he ever actually goes home. I scoffed some lunch, hooked up the trailer and headed down to see no one at all at the Nairns end. Just Rob the Human Metronome going back on forth. By the time I hit the water, a few punters had wandered out through the crabs and cobblers up at Wamba. Pretty shortly thereafter, the usual suspects plus a few more joined the scenic tour of the paddocks on a cruisey afternoon.

I took at satchel of fins out to the Grumpynuts marker so I could easily swap between the various lemons and lemonade. I was concerned that someone would mistake it for a bag of Methandurah’s finest, but I didn’t expect the culprit to be Cap’n Calm.

The fins were Kermit the Ugly green FF22  10% thickness as the benchmark for a couple of TPU efforts. (TPU is a rubbery type of print material) The TPU fins were underwhelming, perhaps the best of them was a delta type, but overall they would be better suited to a much smaller board/sail combo to evaluate.

The end result was $10 low tech ugly Kermit wins again.

Aside from that, there were some beaut little patches of water to glide across, the sun was shining, the water just Goldilocks and most of all, I dodged BullyBoyFatBasil.Tongue out

The first fin is 23cm with truncated foil. 8% foil. Printed entirely in TPU, with eucalyptus dowel cores and carbon rod leading edge. Filled with epoxy internally. One layer of epoxy externally to protect the TPU surface. The trailing edge tip can twist off much like a sail.
Initial thoughts are that it seems to be reasonably behaved, but simply not able to generate enough lift to be used with a 7.0 sail and my weight. I don’t know whether the lack of power is due to excessive twist off or a minimal foil thickness, or both. More testing on a smaller sail m might resolve that some more.

The second fin is a more traditional delta. Again an 8% foil. The initial fin was far too flexible, hence the radical surgery to embed a steel rod through the guts. The trailing edge can still flex, but I suspect it will ultimately fail along the epoxy - TPU join. The performance of this fin was better, but again no where enough lift for the rig on the day. It felt promising when going fully downhill, but had to be nursed around on the initially bear-away. There was not enough lift to give any chance of a loaded slingshot type of run. Unfortunately I pranged the edge of this one trying a sneaky run over the gravel pit. The TPU didn’t fracture because its rubber like properties, but it did tear and leave a quite excellent weed catching defect.
So far the full TPU fins are not a success, but I will not say they are a fail either. From a 3D printing viewpoint they are expensive when compared the dirt cheap PLA, and slightly more expensive PETG, without producing a worthwhile return. This may change if I get the fin versus sail combo correct.

You right Fangy, quite ugly but fun try'n.   I did similar full TPU fins some time ago (7 in total all FF22 exact replicas to compare) but as previously mentioned all duds and no drive/lift.  All basically solid mast on leading edge.  Hopefully attached pic works of the last couple.. The blue one is half filled with solid epoxy with the bottom half just 15% TPU, the green one filled with epoxy.

Latest iteration inspired by you Fangy.   This my worn out FF22 (now 18) rock solid copy....Solid leading edge and mast, flexible TPU trailing edge printed as one in Aussie green and gold.   Epoxy cured now..hope to test tomorrow but have other commitments ...

Fingers crossed for a win Jim!

I will be very interested to see how the junction between the two materials holds up. Your approach looks easier to fabricate.

ya, I figure the expoxy should hold the bond together...worked a treat with the other horizontal orientation..2000Km logged with no delamination
