Area 45, Inverloch.

Wow! strange wind today. Up and down like a YoYo! I measered 30kts plus from the end of the boat ramp when I arrived and the inlet was angy whitecaps. A few crew standing around having beer saying it not much good going out with the sail sizes thay had. I rigged the 4.7 and took the CA40 speed board. but by the time I got to the waters edge, Kato, who had gone on a 5.2m, came back and said he was way underpowered and it felt like the wind had gone. I thought I might as well have a go anyhow so when a bit of a gust came I took off, just powered enough to plane.

The wind angle was very good for the Port Tack speed bank but I was only seeing 36kt on the run. Struggled to get going to get back upwind. A couple of runs later, nothing much had changed, maybe even a bit worse, so I started back to get a bigger something. Hafeway back the wind escalated to 30kts and I was hammering over the chop. I quickly changed my mind and turned around for another run. Hooley Dooley! Completely, fully lit as I approached the bearaway. Luckily it eased slightly as I entered the run and just as I got settled the wind escaleted to FULLY LIT again! Whooho. The speed very quickly flew past 40 as I was starting to run out of run. I saw 42 on the dial as I backed off and rounded up. I recon I was still accelerating strongly, but I was heading straight into some really ugly chop. Pulled up and saw well over 42 peak. 42 1 second and 41.6 2 second. This was just out of nowhere.

Next run I could not get over 33! the wind had switched off as quickly as it switched on. But man, that one run for a glorious few seconds was worth all the dogging around and smashing upwind in the chop! Later I got another half gust at the end and hit a little over 38. Earlier that would have been a highlight, but now it was just a disappointment. Laughing

Great to see the usual suspects having a go, despite the variability. Poor Muffin man was on an even smaller sail than me, but soldiered on like the champ he is. BTW. the Muffins were GREAT! Cool

AND, it looks like a 4th day in a row tomorrow, but I'm going to another type of event and trying to let my old muscles recover. Maybe again on Monday.......Wink
