Mike, I must try those testosterone and anabolic steroid jabs they work don't they.? Those are very impressive numbers for any speedsailor let alone the most mature but one!  Congratulations, very well done.  Can you let me have a look at your best Alpha track please?

Thanks Guys, as Joe says, it was great conditions for alphas, a fairly steady 20kts + wind across very smooth for over 400m.

Here's the alpha course.

I was nicely set up for it, the 5.2 was too underpowered for max speed, but very comfortable powered for control across the wind. I also had a slightly bigger fin than I normally use for deep down wind, but it was great across the wind. Was fine through the shallow weedy stuff at speed, But I had trouble getting going in it, if I hit a big lull.

And looks like Joe's alpha marker wasn't a lot of good to me, all these alphas are too tight. I really need a 50m gate to be a lot of use.

OK Reg, here's my best track, done in a very similar location back in 2016

This one I used my method of looking over the shoulder before the gybe, lining my track up with a spot on the horizon, and heading back to it. This is just under 50m. You wouldn't want to try and get much closer, because the seperation distance is only accurate to +/- 1m, (and the GW60 does it different to all other programs)

So I'm used to heading back to my mark, works if the mark is distant, but not if it's close.

This day was even better for alphas, water was a bit higher but not just flat, absolute glass! There was an oil slick coming all the way from PT Grey, across the weed. Fastest water I've ever sailed in, including Lake George. So smooth a couple of newbies gybed before they hit it thinking it was a total wind shadow. But as soon as you were in it you accelerated. I think total smooth indicates laminar flow, so the whole of the sail is in good wind.

Tailwind, as I said you can still do a good alpha with a min speed below 15knts. So that was a mistake in my watch settings guide, speed genie is better set around 10kts for the average alpha result. Min speed on yesterday's result was a fraction over 12kts

Mike, back in 2013 I was taking regular Nanna naps, and not feeling all that energetic, so in 2014, I did 2 things, increased my exercise regime and went on the 5X2 diet. By the time I hit Lake George I was "jumping out of my skin), as my wife said. Then at 69 I managed 10hrs sailing to get 330kms.

Energy levels have fell since then, but I've also had back problems, and with covid I haven't been exercising as mutch. I'm back to fairly regular nana naps, and need a day or two to recover after a good windsurfing session.

And no Reg, I'd stay away for those kind of jabs! I don't think the long term effects are all that positive.

So this is a bit confusing, I've overlaid my PB alpha Jan 2016 tracks over yesterdays. This shows how conditions have changed, the 2016 runs are now choppy. This also evident by how much the speed run has moved. yesterdays 35.1 is a long way further south than the 2016 35.8

Yesterdays runs are to the left, 2016 to the right. I think this is why the 2016 water was faster, it's not in as much weed. It was smooth more because of the oil slick, not so much because it's shallow and weedy.

I've just had a closerlook at these two alphas, and it's obvious one big difference. The better one, has a more downwind exit, allowing better acceleration, out of the gybe. Sunday's gybe could have afforded to have a more downwind angle to the exit, and still be within the 50m.

It's just so hard to get everything exactly right.

Any which way you look at it Mike, it's still a sweet gybe!
