Early start before the kids get up.

Headed to Melville to test out a new (2nd) board.

The first time I have ever bought a board specifically to suit a fin!

Anyway conditions were nothing short of atrocious .

30 to 5 knots and oncoming chop in the 3 to 4 footr range.

Rrd 105 v5/evo4 6.4/cl34 and vector volt 36

Paddymac and lao arrived  as I packed up.

Melville 7.8m E5, Mistral 112, CLSL2-38. Gusty on and off stuff hard to get motivated to rig, and eventually settled for the biggest stuff I had in the car. Had some nice runs across the wind. Fin was smoking for its size. Finally got drilled in a 30kt rail squall... ugly ugly stuff trying to hang on before getting destroyed in a ball of spray.

So what was your take on the 105 Steve...and which was the best fin combo?

Really bad conditions to judge But initial feelings are the cl 34 Was slippery downwind and safe. But not enough lift across and into the wind In the full on chop, flatter water would be better. The 36carbon volt was as you would expect in the Conditions, better on the wind and still safe off the wind. Not sure if it was as quick. It also whistled around the (guessing) 25-30kn mark And went quite after that.

34 is too short for that board for cross wind sailing... try 36 or 38. When you want to go upwind/cross wind efficiently you need the fin centre of pressure in a sweet spot so that it balances torque on the board to counter heel pressure from those sailing angles. Too short a fin will put the pressure centre too close to the bottom of the board and the windward rail will dip and cause an increased loss of torque due to the cant (it will also suck the board onto the water). Compounding problems make good trim suddenly gone. Too long a fin and you are forced to put weight on the tail and adopt a more upright stance... which is unstable when you are powered up and have to sheet out.

My slalom fin designs have a much smaller tip than say, the vector. The vertical centre of pressure is sitting closer to the board for the fin size, so in that respect it actually feels shorter than 34cm compared to something else. But it makes up for it with efficiency and power. For cross wind/upwind sailing I recommend something a bit longer- but it will be very powerful. Yesterday I was running 38cm in my 112 (similar width to your RRD) for slalom angles and it was perfect. It did not feel too big even in the stronger stuff.

^^ Nice sales pitch Chris....very scientific!

I use a Choco FB 36 in my 105....but I get a loss of torque due to the old cant sailing it!

^^ Classic. Unfortunately I'm all torque which leaves me with too much cant

horses for courses--

(and as what the slowone said..)

my previous 102 (same dimensions) worked the best with a 34 talon (all points of sailing),

the reason i got the 34 clockwood.

the lockwood will be fine (awesome) for downwind speed which is why i got the board,

slalom racing across the wind is not something i do but if i do it will be with the 36.

As a smaller rider (short as well as lighter) i wont apply as much torque on the foil as bigger guys

even taller light guys...
