Kyeemagh, NSW, Cheeky Monkey ML112, TR4 - 6.6M AND muf 39cm

First sail in the last two months. I found I struggled when really overpowered but comfortable the rest of the time (when there was wind!)

Budgewoi Lake, NSW, AU

JP Slalom IV 84L, Gaastra GTX 7.0m, Maui Delta Slalom 19cm

Saw Karl's video of Budgewoi Lake and decided it looked worth the 90 minute drive (compared with 20mins to Kyeemagh) - and... it most certainly is!. So the wind was a tad disappointing but it was easy to see huge speeds being possible here, even for a lightweight like me. The delta fin was brilliant, straight through big patches of weed with just a slight deceleration, only just starting to hit the shellfish when it was ankle deep. Heard a new (for me) windsurfing sound - the buzzing noise of micro-chop giving way to a scraping noise as the water turned completely smooth, much like a snowboard on ice. Not sure why that's so cool, but it is!

Never close to being overpowered so I knew top speeds weren't going to be impressive, but was hopeful for a decent alpha. Didn't quite expect such a result! My last 5 best alphas all being 19.6-19.9, I thought I'd never crack 20...

Good to meet a few of the Marauders before heading out - thanks for the pointers lads. I'll definitely be back!

** UPDATE **

Very sad this, but on closer investigation it looks like there was a problem with the gpx file I uploaded to KA72. See my comment below for details. The miracle alpha is no more..!

Great alpha Sparky!! I've never seen an alpha so close to a 2 sec peak - that's got to be a record...

Wow.... A huge jump for your alpha. Yes Budgewoi is worth the drive if we want to get PBs. Well done David.

** SAD CLIMBDOWN **

So I'm not sure what's gone on here, but there seems to have been a problem with the gpx file I uploaded to KA72.

I've just started using GPSResults - new computer, which is a Mac, which RSpeed isn't available for.

I loaded the original SBN file into GPSResults, and deleted the first 335 trackpoints before it got satellite lock - what I thought would be the equivalent of 'Delete invalid' in RSpeed. Then I checked the results - and there's a 25kt alpha with me going 23.3kt at 16:35:00 in the middle of a turn. I exported the trackpoints and uploaded to KA72. Happy days.

But looking again this morning, it looks like a very tight turn - pretty unlikely it was that fast. Turning off Doppler, the speed suddenly drops to 2.9kt at 16:35:00..!

If I don't delete the first 335 trackpoints, the Doppler and non-Doppler speeds are consistent and not rapid - and there are three missing trackpoints with interpolated speeds. Deleting those first 335 trackpoints seems to have done something very strange in the vicinity of missing trackpoints.

So I've gone back to GPS Results and gone through my usual workflow - load SBN, delete invalid, export trackpoints, upload to KA72, post to GPSTC. All the results are pretty close, except the alphas are way slower, and - perhaps a clue? - the distance is 10km further.

Any ideas?

Hmm weird... I use realspeed on my mac by running windows in the free virtualbox

https://www.virtualbox.org/

I can have a look at the tracks in realspeed if you like?

I do have Realspeed in a vbox too - but got GPSResults so I could run it natively. Realspeed shows roughly the same results as I've now posted, with or without deleting invalid points. I might ask Manfred (creator of GPSResults) if he can see what's going on.

Bugger Sparky! That is a pity... but I am impressed by your geekness in looking into this.
