Pipe Clay Lagoon, TAS, AU  Just me alone versus the pond early this morning.  The pond won the first round due to rocks off the far point. After a coffee for me and sandpaper for the fin I think I won the second round finally getting a 30 knot 2s. Call it a draw today and great fun.  Strong gusty southerly and very choppy early, the speed run coming good later. Tag-teamed with Karen who arrived as I was leaving. F2 FSW 87, Severne Blade 5.3, NS Maui freestyle 25cm.

South Arm, Goofballs and Derwent river. TAS, AU. Isonic 87/107, ODR5 6.2/5.6, Volt 30, 32 and 34cm.

Big day. I forgot what time it got light here. Got a bit excited and left home around 3.30am. Not really sure what I was thinking but maybe thought there might be a slight chance to sail under the moon light. Got that one wrong as it was overcast, raining and too dark. Got on the water at 7am at South Arm but rigged too big with the 6.2. It was blowing around 30 knots S/SW and the chop was by far the worst I have seen there. Came straight in and rigged the 5.6. Still too choppy and I was really stuggling and getting smashed by the chop. After a couple of near catapults and a big dark shadow swimming underneath me it was time to go. Went to Goofballs and it was up and down. I was on the 87 and 5.6. Very happy to get the spot record here with over 35 knots. Got home around 12pm and it felt more like 5pm. Looked out at the river and decided to take out the 107, 6.2. Did a down winder to Sandy Bay which was pretty insane in huge choppy seas.

A very all over the place sail. Was swinging SSW to S and ended up very westerly in the end so gave up. Pity the tide was low could have sailed on the speed run and used the whole lagoon. Anyway good to get some gybing practice in.

Yeah Steve you're certifiably crazy! 3.30 am start, in that weather, madness.

Care to elaborate on the big dark shadow? Or is that a subliminal metaphor for your mental state after you realized how crazy you were?

Thanks guys, Easty I cannot be sure but it looked like a shark. Definately wasnt a skate as I was in about 2 metres of water. I was sailing towards the western side and then had to get back to the other side. On my way back it actually swam under my board again. It was kinda swiming in that S motion. Scared the crap out of me both times. It was big what ever it was.

Any sane shark that witnessed a mad man charging around at full throttle in insane conditions would be deperate to keep well away.

I reckon you scared the crap out of it!

Thought Mortimer up near the neck would be the last place you'd see a shark, so shallow, or maybe they like shallow.Undecided I bet it was rough going in the Derwent, especially the gap between Droughty and South Arm. I was thinking of going off Sandy Bay but didn't want to go out there on my own in those conditions.

Three pretty epic sessions there Steve!  Well done - crazy!!  I reckon you saw a shark.  Probably not a white pointer, but plenty of sharks out there, which is a good thing!  We share the water with them!

Plenty of rays in the shallows down there, (and Doran's and the Pond). Quick net search came up with small whites and hammerheads liking to eat rays. Not many hammerheads down here. But as Dave says, that's cool. Their territory.

Just had a play around with the tracks. The yellow line is where I should have launched at the Taroona boat ramp for the down the river run. From Blackmans Bay to Taroona it was really bad and super rough. From Taroona down to sandy Bay wasnt too bad and a lot of fun. From the end of Opposum Bay to Sandford its quite smooth and easy going. The beach at Sandford at the end of the red lines was really flat in the bay. Red line is the 1 hour and black triangle at South arm was the beast below.

Thanks for the acknowledgement Will, Steve, Alan, Dave and Cookie! Felt I learnt a bit more about controlling the board on the short chop and when tailwalking at times. Adds a bit to the confidence.
