3502 days ago Keefs Luderitz board/4.6m/KEEF custom weedy Nicely powered when I launched, flew upwind to where MT and Rick were getting their best runs and was instantly at one with the setup even though I had never riden the board before or used a cambered sail in the last year. The board and fin combo were perfect, went upwind like a formula board and slippery as when going off the wind. But by the time I got upwind and in position the wind dropped and spent a lot of time knee deep in water at each end of the lake. The wind changed direction and the smooth spot the others sailed was now all choppy.Found a new smooth area on the other side of the lake which was formed by a long weed bank.It was at a perfect angle, going deep downwind. Only problem was I didn't have enough power to maintain such a deep angle.Kept hanging around there hoping to line up with with a gust from a rain squall. In the end I gave up and went for broke in the choppy water in the middle where there was clean air.
After about 2 hours I thought to myself, wow I havn't even got wet yet. Hmmm then hit a rock, big chunk out of Keefs fin,hit a weedberg at speed and catapulted and then while running downwind over chop (last run as always) did my highest speed crash ever. While flying through the air ,still in the harness had enough time to think ,ouch this one is realy going to hurt. But nothing,no pain ,I was just wet, then looked over to the rig and it was limp looking.Thought i was 1km upwind with a broken mast. It was only a broken mast clamp rope, used the uphaul rope for quick fix and limped home to call it a day.
Lesson- no matter how good you are, always have an uphaul rope. I have never understood those mucho's who don't!
