Boombas with Cap’n Calm and Rayman and a truly hectic bit of breeze. 

When I started rigging there was just enough puff for me to consider the Koncept6.6. The wind dutifully filled in quickly, so by the time I got on the water I was overdone from the start. 

Not to worry, I had a new toy that would handle a bit of breeze. During the week Elmo had scored gold. It’s a mint condition 1998 F2 277 Ride. Thank you, Elmo! :-)

 The board is 58 wide and 103 litres and a pretty straight forward design. It has a flat rocker from front foot strap aft, and little or no tail kick, but does have a pronounced V all the way through the planing surface.

My first run was probably the only one where I was close to having a manageable amount of power. I had dropped in an FF22 and the result was a confidence-inspiring level of control and comfort. I would have dearly loved to have given the board a run downhill because it feels as though it has oodles of potential. 

Instead, I stopped on the Point at Narimba to have a quick confab with the lads. Unfortunately, 103 litres floats me like a car battery and so whilst the other two charged off downhill into Boombas, I had to do the walk of shame to go and find some deeper water in order to get going. By the time I had walked off the shallows, the breeze was too much for the 6.6 and so I headed back, alternating between slightly terrified to completely brown pants. 

 Of course, a cup of tea, the usual laziness and an inspired and slightly inaccurate belief that the wind was going to back off soon, saw me simply cranking on the downhaul until the mast was more bent than any NSW pollie, topped off nicely with a trudge back out into the fray. The wind, of course, redoubled its efforts to make me look like a clown. I reckon we were in the mid-thirties wind speed and it was just too much for me to have a crack. 

The Cap’n and I waited out a few strong squalls hoping we would get a lull, but in the end, we just had to run up the white flag and head back in, which hurt all the more because the low tide had created some nice water with remarkably small chop given the wind strength. 

A Top Ten New Fangy Toy day, but way past my pay grade. I can’t wait to see how the Lilacs boys fare. Go Mobbers!l

exhilerating sail with fangy and rayman at Boombas.

light to start off with, so went with the 53cm board and 5.8 koncept, with 20cm 55d deltoid, thinking I could hang onto that when it picked up, --wrong!

For once the wind stayed with the forecast, then gave us a bit more instead of dying off.

So changed to the 5.0 and 48 with 19cm deltoid. This felt much better until the squalls started, then I missed my oldhelmet with visor, Dot's helmet hasn't got one, so I was getting stung badly by the rain. And the runs where getting scary, chop had built up and I was again overpowered. Started to freeze waiting it out, so called it a day.

But I sure do know I'm alive!

I was a bit worried about narimba quey as our markers are extremely hard to see in a grey out, so we stopped when I thought we were in the vicinity and looked around. As you can see by the tracks we were very close. It was easier to see the light coloured limestone under the water than the posts.

So just be careful folks!

I knew it was going to be a good day when I saw the Mr Whippy van parked 2 mins up the road from Lilacs & as it turns outl the forecast was right on the money so there were a lot of big smiles today.

Shane & I were joined by an invasion from the North in Jonski, Stroppo, Tom, Doddi, Slowboat, Woody & Flatchat. Took a bit of getting used to with the extra wind & at times the 5.4 was to much for me. Started on the Sonic & swapped to the Manta later on, considering it's only the second time I've used it was pleasantly suprised how easy it was to sail & the Lockwood fin was rock solid.

No PB's but a few Top 5's so happy with that. Learnt a lot & got to watch some real fast sailors strut their stuff.

Albany, WA, AU TRXI 5.9 Missile 49/Kestral 18 Top trip with a great bunch of guys! I took some video so will post that later maybe with a bit more of a report 🧐

Albany, WA, AU Interesting and a great learning day out on the water with the visiting Big Guns from the North ! Within two runs the sail plastic batten retainer broke so after an hour on the shore for repairs and a fin change, I was back out on the water. Not a good fin choice. Bit too big for the weed and the tide. So back in AGAIN....board change and Fangy fin Felt better with that choice of gear.
