iSonic90, 7.2 Mach3, 21cm weedspeed.  A lovely drive followed by a lovely sail on nice flat shallow water.  I tried my best for the hour but kept hitting the bottom in the gybes.  Highlight of the day was my mast snapping at 24 knots, 2km from the launch site!  Waricle, Vic and Flex (in his Tesla) kept me on my toes.

Glory Holes, Australind, WA, AU.  Since we so close for hr thought I'd try again today but highly aware of burning much fossil fuel for essentially a frivalous activity plus to add some variety to the drive thought today I'd do it emissions free.  To complicate matters the wifey wanted the EV to go hiking with her mates in the hills in the morning but the agreement was I got it in the afternoon.  Got the car around noon with only half a tank of electrons.   Luckily whilst not windsurfing I am involved with emission free/carbon neutral EV racing and am the owner/creator of the worlds first and fastest carbon neutral (mainly emissions free) portable fast charger (at least as far as we are aware... and up until 2 weeks ago the fastest EV charger in Perth).  Unfortuantley the portable bit is currently ICE powered but working on that.

Essentially is a junk Tesla M3 battery trickle charged on solar with backup waste cooking oil generator (waste deep fryer oil kindly donated by Maccas) and a DC coupled 80KW EV charger bolted on. This charger is really designed for remote roadhouses to get them off running diesel generators 24/7+ instal a EV fast charger as a bonus.. On top of that also can provide 30KW AC off grid (for the non engineers out there it = lots).

Short term use is competitng in the open class Targa West rally, the car (stock Tesla M3) beats all the ICE cars but the tricky bit is charging the beast in remote areas.    Short story is I got back to 90% tank (about 300km range at maximum possible legal speed) in about 20 minutes with zero emissions as battery had been charging for 5hrs a day at 3KW on solar (just the excess unneeded solar..can charge at 35Kw at present if a source available).

Took off and arrived at about 2:30 to see Reg, Waricle and unknown sailor fanging along in a nice breeze.  Rigged up asap with same gear as yesterday, headed out and wind seemed to die..was way worse than yesterday and everyone except the Bantam struggling.  This went on for 45 min and stopped a few times to try tune the sail more but basically just ended up dredging the fin or chugging.  Then of course a squall came through which meant detuning sail and was great for all of 5 min then back to the chugga chugga.   The others gave up, didn't realise Reg game up because of broken mast till after rigged down and a bit of wind came in but was so inconsistant was a real struggle to even maintain a plane. Once off the plane was all over due to the tide so low.   Got maybe 20 minutes in the end of sort of nice wind and pushed Cinderella time as much as I could but the wind dropped completely and almost (would have been faster) had to walk the last km back to base...better it turns out than Reg's walk of shame it appears.   Since wind was so intermittant/non existant my hr is lousy...should have been so easy.  Should rigged the 8.6 as other than the 5 min squall at least would have kept planing.

Once rigged down, a chat with Waricle and in nice dry clothes Reg turned up to tell his story...he left and then the wind turned of course near perfect with a good 18knots, had it been local would have gone out again.   Fanged home, was surprised the big board on top didn't hurt my efficiency much (average 220WHr/km for the boffins at 118km/hr both ways).

That's a very good hour for the conditions Reg.

A very nice set of numbers across the board.

Sorry to hear about the mast. Was that from hitting the bottom?

Thanks Anita.  It was 7.2M2 wind so I was happy with the numbers.  However, because I am such a huge fellow, my bulk and muscle were just too much for the mast (apparently) and it just snapped at the wishbone, quite odd really.

Good to hear all the tech chat but .36 of a knot Flex...  .36!!

In hindsight I burnt 4-5 min detuning the sail in the massive squall in my best hr..should have just sucked it up and kept going, easy to say now but was shitting myself at the time..those mins if had kept going would have made all the difference to the hr

Waricle, to be honest a bit of both

Eh Reg, .36 of a knot?  I haven't done the maths....all I know know is "DO NOT STOP EVER FOR ANY REASON" if you are trying for an hr...all I figure is if I'd not stopped to detune it would have been better and for sure better than by .36...I'm guessing about 6knots would have done it.  Should have just run for those minutes as was so shallow...

So close! But 10/10 for effort,  for making the drive to Australind on a  dubious  forecast and giving it your best shot.

So tricky to get a good hour in frontal conditions and the wind has not been cooperative for us this month. Flex, I  think we need you to work on a wind generator...

Reg, you put in a superb effort today scoring 3 top 5 scores in the process. I thought your 19 kn hour would get us over the line, but not quite, unless there are some late posters out there...

Flex you have discovered the key to a good hour is not to stop for anything.

The other key is to make sure you note the start time and ensure you do a full hour and then some. An hour is longer than you think.

Now Flex did you manage a 16.6 or better for the hour?

Reg

Just to make you feel better Flex, I stopped twice to adjust my outhaul.  That occupied almost exactly 2 minutes.  If I hadn't bothered, my average would have been 19.6 knots instead of 19.1 which is .5 knot, more than the .36 needed.  I am a stupid person, Anita is correct, do not stop for any reason especially when you are going OK.

I stopped because totally out of control, otherwise one should know I don't stop. The wise Waricle also just stopped nearby for the squall to pass.  It took me over 2 mins just to get the sail in a position to adjust, then trying to add more downhaul as I'd let a pile off is not easy..then of course my clove hitch around the harness hook turned out to not be a clove hitch but a extra special scout special which took a minute to undo.  Next time I'll not bother trying to adjust because the squalls are fairly brief and I needed everything again once the wind died.......there is still today...so there is hope

Flex, don't feel bad, it is more important to stay safe. This is only a frivolous activity, as you said.

as Boz said, great effort guys.

Anita...... Frivolous?  Frivolous?  My last three outings have been well documented near death experiences!  I am clearly prepared to die for the frivol.  Tongue out

Reg, originally I thought you had gotten lost...at least you walked the right way this time.  I hope the boom you broke wasn't the one I rescued for you.

I learnt not to stop early on . I stopped in an hr attempt to change clewholes..like you I thought bad things could happen if I didn't.. It's surprising how much it brings the hour down!
