Safety Bay with a 115L Starboard S-Type and a 7.5m KA Koncept. It was windy compared to yesterday.

Gybe? What's a gybe?

Great way to start the new year. More PBs to boot.

Gybes are when you turn the craft's stern through the eye of the wind, so you are going down wind. At the end of the gybe your craft is travelling on the opposite tack to when it entered the gybe.

Thanks guys!

Karl, the comment about the gybes was a joke. I guess you don't know about my sad sense of humour yet! Laughing

Yesterday I had a tonne of power and Safety Bay was shallow so I spent most of the time going from one end to the other and jumping off and turning around. On my larger board I have no fear flying over the shallow bits, but on the s-type it has a 34cm fin which can be a bit low if you go too slow over the sandbar. As a result I only did about 2 or 3 gybes, and I only did those to see if I could get a decent alpha or two.

No worries, what is missing from the interweb is a sarcasm tag. I knew you were kidding about the gybes.

Pretty good alpha if you have to get off and turn around at each end.

Perhaps you need to invest in a weed fin over there if sailing in shallower waters.

Weed fin? Is there a place in WA where you can sail without a weed fin?

If I had pointers in my boards over here I think I would be lucky to get a couple of metres. After sailing here for the last 5 summers or so I have gotten so used to weed fins that I use weed fins in my boards all the time back home in Sydney.

Weed fins are also a remarkably good way to slow down when you get that little bit close to the sandbar and want to prevent that sudden stop at the end Surprised

Hardie, is there any place down there where you are not surrounded by rocks and giant stingrays? Somewhere with a little bit less chop than Sandy Point should just about do it...
