Windxtasy (13938km): Peel Inlet, WA, AU 7.5Koncept, iSonic 111, 40LE weedy My first 40! (nm that is!) Actually I scored two distance PB's today, one for sailing and one for the most indirect route taken to get to Mandurah, on account of me being so engrossed in an interview on the radio that I missed all three Mandurah exits off the freeway! I wasn't sure I had gone too far until I passed Herron Point Rd, and then I had to proceed to the next exit to turn around and head back. I was half an hour late arriving and JJ was wondering where I had gotten to! It may have been a good thing because we went and checked out Liptons, decided it was too shallow, and by the time we returned to Novara the wind had dropped right off. If we had rigged when I first arrived we would have been underpowered. My mission for the day was to improve on my one hour. In my current state of fitness I wasn't sure I could go for an hour without stopping, so I didn't want to promise any more than that, but I still felt good after the hour so I thought I'd do my best to provide some backup and on the water support for JJ. When the wind got a bit much and I came in to change down I was 6nm short of a PB so I decided to head out again after the wind dropped off a bit. I passed my previous PB of 32.something and thought I'd make it 35 to make sure. Passed 35 and still feeling good so I thought 40 is a nice round figure to aim for. At 38.5 the wind dropped right off and it took about half an hour to dog the last 1.5nm, helping me to decide that I would stop at 40. A bit disappointed with the hour, but happy with the distance. Thanks to JJ for the backup and company, and thanks to Decrepit and Pepe for the local knowledge. Anita 2, rocks 0! | ||||||||||||||||||
JJ (25827km): Peel Inlet, WA, AU Distance mission with Anita (who sailed brilliantly). A nice 15 knot breeze at midday so rigged the 8m and the big M. The breeze was building by 2, so put the same sail on the M112 but the breeze started fading, so after 15 minutes it was back to the M137. Got skunked completely between about 3 and 4.30, probably only did about 5 miles in an hour. About to give it away when the breeze booted in at about 5, gusts to perhaps 25 knots. The 8m was a bit of a handful but it was too late to change, I actually got a few good squirts in the flats over towards Liptons and the hour of wind helped get the miles up. A pleasant quite relaxing sail (a bit tedious when the wind conked out) with a good crew. Mistral 137, HSM GPS 8m, Vector weedy 40
