Kyeemagh, NSW, AU

105L Fanatic Falcon, 7.0m Gaastra GTX, 40cm Fanatic fin

Was hoping to do some big distance today but didn't even make the ton before getting totally exhausted. Haven't been sailing enough recently..!

Parked at Kyeemagh but the wind seemed good enough to venture down to Sandringham. Really nice wind there, lots of flat water. Completely tired myself out and then had to get back to the car - god, that was tough. Anyway, I survived...

Canton Beach, NSW, AU

An eventful day and evening. A good day sailing at Canton Beach, tried out a JP slalom board, probably about 6 or 7 years old. 84 litres, 55 cms wide. I have not ridden anything like this before. A lot different to my Tabou Rocket 105, narrower and definately does not float my weight when the wind drops. The JP is definately more difficult to gybe, I fell off a few times when I got my footwork wrong. But was able to get a couple of half decent ones too  when powered up so there is hope. So had some great powered up runs, using my Loft 02 5.9. However when the wind dropped it was a long walk home. That was the beginning of our troubles.

My van would not start. The battery was flat from leaving an inverter on all day. I rang Mick Kay who put me onto Jeff who came around. Could not get the van going. The engine turned over but would not fire. Eventually got the NRMA. He couldn't get it going. It looks like a fuel supply issue which is a pain for a diesel. So had the van towed to a local mechanic would apparently is pretty good and knows diesels. Stayed the night in a hotel in Wyong as the last train for the night had left and caught a train home this morning.

Good one David. I went sailing at Canton Beach so as long as the GPS works I should be able to back you up. We are still at Canton. The battery in the van is flat due to leaving an inverter on all day. Waiting for the NRMA to turn up.

I tried out a JP 84 slalom board and it goes quite fast though I can't sail it when the wind drops.

Impressive distance... I don't know if i'd be brave enough to venture that far in a patchy sutherly. The walk of shame would be a shocker!

That's a bit of bad luck, Karl. Sorry to hear! That board sounds more like what you need for LG next year. We'll done on the PB. Full of beans now mate!

Hi Karl, I have one of those JP Slalom II 84's and they're brilliant little boards. Being a high wind slalom board, they have a bit of rocker to clear the chop. They're fantastic in big southerlies on Botany Bay (I used mine yesterday). They're not as fast as a speed board, I have a carbon Art SP50 which is the same volume as the JP 84, but they're so easy and fun to sail.

Nice going guys!! Particularly well done on the PB Karl... you are flying!! Sorry to hear about the pain with the car. I once had something very similar happen to me... except it was my fuel pump that had gone. I sat waiting for about 4 hours for a mate with a car trailer to pick me up!! Cry

I just got a call from the mechanic. The problem was the fuel lifter pump's seal was blown so the fuel could not get to the engine. Its been fixed for a reasonable cost so that is a relief. In a way its good for something like this to happen now rather than on the road to or from South Australia.

I'm going to buy that JP Slalom. Its not that expensive with the fin. I'm tempted to just take it to Lake George as I think it would be quite usuable in anything over a solid 15 knot breeze. I'd take the following sails, 6.6m, 5.9m, 5.5m, 4.4m. All RAF sails. A bit of a gap at the 5.0 mark. Perhaps I can pick one up.

Thanks for the kind words everyone and thanks to everyone who helped me out on Saturday afternoon. It was a bit stressful but a bit of a memorable adventure too.
