3678 days ago 1 categories Decided to venture South with JJ, Recycle and Lunny.
When we arrived it was windy so rigged the 6.3 and the 91 but after working up to the Pengoes bar to find Lunny it had dropped away.
Headed back to base and couldn't be bothered re-rigging so plugged in the yacht.
Did an open water hour with legs up to 5km as some carnac practise.
Safety Bay provides a chance to do open water sailing without being too far offshore. Wind was 15-20 SW on the Garden Island reading but it was gusty as when I launched so went with an unusual combo of 6.3 Blade and 120L F2 SX 77 and a 33cm weedy(too light for my 91L). Rolling chop / swell (Rottnest reading about 1.5m)
Penguin Island bar to the other side of the bay is just under 5km on a run square to the wind. Yellow line is 4.5Km
A number of observations:
No way on a regular seabreeze that the Carnac race is going to be a reach in both directions. It is going to be upwind / downwind unless it is a proper Southerly. Yellow line is 4.5Km at the same angle.
Long legs on big boards in open ocean are hard work! I did 7-8 runs, some slightly upwind in about 50 mins for 32 kms total ( the supposed distance of the possible 2 lap race) and it was very physical! 6-7 mins on the same tack (about 4-5 Km) starts to get uncomfortable in those conditions and holding a line across the swell is much harder than a downwinder.
Will try and do a go at the actual sailing area next week if the conditions permit.
