JJ (25827km): Point Walter On the water at 2pm, Jonah, Norts and Isaac already out. Super gusty 10 to 22 knots, glad I had the big board to get through the long lulls. Mistral 137 Carbon, KA 7m, CL SL2 38

Lunny (42007km): Point Walter, WA, AU Well that was an interesting day! Launched at Attadale and was having a cracker of a time, bit gusty and lumpy as hell in places. Worked myway up to Peli Pt, bit flatter and a couple out there too. While out deep i dropped a gybe from a lull in the wind, done it plenty of times but i felt a bit of a scrape across my right shin. Oh dear, a quick look at it and there seemed to be a slightly large scratch with some loveley red juice coming out of it, pulled out some plastic, resiny g10 looking stuff from it....ooooh thats more than a scratch. Headed back to Peli pt where i kindly asked a couple of guys for a bit of tape so i could head back without leaving a trail of burley brine for the bull sharks to sniff out. Well wouldnt you know it i met Bunyip who kindly offered his first aid kit and had me wrapped up ready to go......to the hospital So i plodded back as the wind had now dropped off. So after a few hours in the hospital the loveley doc had whacked 8 stitches in my shin, damn i thought it was just a scratch. She also found a bit more g10 and said the bone had a nick in it too. Cant believe my damn shin has damaged my wonderful fin! Look theres a bit of fin missing.
Ah well i guess I'm out for a week. Good hour out though and a big thanks to Bunyip for helping me out RRD xfire 102, Reflex2 7.0, Tribal ws shin shredder 33

Windxtasy (13938km): Well I have a story too, but no numbers. I was feeling sore in the shoulders today and thought the 5 – 30 knot swings this morning might be a bit much, so I decided Peli Point mid afternoon as the wind started to pick up again might be the best idea. Arrived at Peli at 2.30 to find Bunyip and Gustenzo had just come in. Bunyip was telling me he’d just patched up one of our team members who had sailed up from Point Walter… The wind was extremely gusty, going from 10 knots to 25 and back again, making it impossible to rig appropriately, and not wanting to have to fight the sail in the gusts I decided to give it a miss. I did however have a new sail that I wanted to rig, to get the settings sorted out. So out with the brand new 2016 5.4 Koncept. I put on as much downhaul tension using my North powerXT as I could muster, but it wasn’t quite enough. Ricey came along and put on as much as he could and it still wasn’t enough. I removed the extension, added an extra 2 cm and tried again. I could not get that extra bit of DH required. I asked Mike for a bit of brute strength and he came over with his winch, and even that was struggling to add DH because everything was already so tight, and the rope snapped before we could add the extra little bit of DH required. I exchanged the rope, and put a longer lever on the north XT. Got to the same downhaul as before (not quite enough, about 1 cm more should do it…) and the lever snapped. I was running out of working extensions at this stage and decided to call it a day. Good thing I hadn’t desperately wanted to sail anyway, although by this time the wind had filled in rather nicely and it was looking inviting. It was a least a good chance to catch up with the Peli Point chapter of the Pinnaroos (GS, Ricey, Bunyip and Gustenzo). The question is, what do I do to get this sail to rig properly? I am thinking the mast must be too stiff if the rope/lever snaps before the required DH is achieved. The mast is an old Rushwind mast (400). It works in my 4.9 Koncept so I had expected it to work in the 5.4. My plan is to try a different mast (once I have fixed my extensions).
Any ideas and loaner masts welcome.
Gustenzo (2220km): Pelican Point, WA, AU 8.6 Turbo 133L Bic 40 FO. What a day, nothing really seemed right, the big gear was better than the small though. Originally went out with a 6.5 and a 95L but the wind was dropping as I went out so put the 6.5 on the 133, not a good feeling combo. JP and I decided the plan was to go big to get through the lulls. Rigged up the 8.6 and tried to make it a 7.8 or 7.5 with downhaul, it was manageable for the conditions. Anita, David and Shaw came down was good to catch up. A lot of stoke was happening on the water which was cool. Some people got good speeds, some nice gybes, some nice long runs and a mate of mine got planing for the first time (addicted!). All in all for the not ideal wind a great day! Hope the extension comes quick Anita and that you find a compatible mast, cheers for the tip with the cam spacer.
Ricey (11089km): Pelican Point, WA, AU South easterly with a lot of holes, but enough wind to get planing some of the time. Got a couple of planing gybes which I was pleased with given the light wind. Rocket 125, 6.0 Gator, 32 fin. Nice to see Anita this side of the river for a change, also Vincent and Shaw.
Jeff (13640km): Point Walter, nice putt around. Gusty as it gets but thats all part of the fun . 6.6 koncept, Mistral 112. A social sail as JJ might say.
Jonah (2414km): Point Walter, WA, AU Quick session at Point walter. tried my new Chris Lockwoods weed fin Im sceptical about the 2 second peak, ive checked there are no car journeys included, there were a couple of good gusts but never felt super quick. 107, reflex 7 7.8 lockwood 35 the volt 39 EDIT (Windxtasy) - file checked with realspeed, sadly the 2 sec peak was only 31.33, which is more consistent with the 5X of 29.391. There were no spikes on the realspeed track and the peak in that run was 31.568. |
