Boz (42999km): Coodanup, WA, AU The day had it all, squalls, thunder, lightning and some die hard sailors. Slowie put in some solid runs in some of the stronger gusts that were too much for this little black duck. Nearly got cooked as well when I sailed straight towards some ominous clouds that off course let me know with a nice and close lightning strike and the crack of thunder enough to make me drop the sail into the water and make myself tiny. Great watching slow one send it on a fairly broad reach that was too much for me, world class from the slow one. Wind swung enough for a brief time to at least get me past the 40, pity Ben and Richo just left the pond when it did swing. One more intrepid sailor arvo shift with Pointy looking forward to see his results. Great the have Woody down as a spectator unfortunately as I know he was itching to be in the pond. Richo 72 (6164km): Coodanup, WA, AU My thumb was still pretty swollen and not much movement in it this morning after yesterdays stack but i thought id go to the Pond and if it was flat id have a sail. I arrived and it was nuking. Woody was in his van watching Slowy Boz and Ben sending it. It didnt look like flat water and hard to make out what line the boys were taking into the speed run. With woody pumping me up for a possible PB i thought id have a crack and see if my thumb could hang onto the boom. It wasnt a good start when i couldnt even apply down haul on the sail and had to get Woody to pretty much rig for me. Anyway with woody talking in my ear saying PB PB PB you could tell he was pretty envious and i even thought he might suit up and take off with my gear, he had that look of a sailor who hasnt been on the water for a long time and with the wind nuking he looked pumped. So i made a dash for the water. I entered the Pond and sailed a little bit nerviously after yesterdays stack and a thumb that could possibly be broked and about 35knts of wind and about 2ft of chop. Not ideal. I made it up to the top and Slowy soon arrived. He had a massive smile so i said hows it going any good times and whats the run like. He said windier than yesterday a little bit broarder and carefull of the chop at the botttom of the run. Ah cool i said. Times ? first run 48 2sec , Boz 38 and Ben 36. Hmmm. I said my thumb is not so good with little movement, he said be careful my gear is well tuned for this nuking wind In the back of my head i could hear Woody saying PB PB PB Slowy said ill follow you. With that i set of. I glanced behind me and couldnt see slowy and the chop wasnt doing my confidence any good , i approuched the run way to low and decide this wasnt a good idear so pulled out. Standing next to the samphire looking up the run about 150 mtrs away was Slowy bearing down on a blistering run. I decided to save it for anoter day and leave it to the pros. 3 runs yesterday and half of one today in possibly the best wind we"ll get all winter Great chatting to the boys at the carpark about the conditions and some blistering times. Woody and i noticrd Boz's weight jacket on the ground , we liftted it up and it felt a solid 6 to 8 kgs, Boz replied 4kgs. No way Boz your 'Dreaming' haha Awesome PB mate.
Snickers (13575km): Coodanup, WA, AU The day goes to Slowy with a phenominal speed. Always humbling and inspiring to sail with. Top notch Boz on the PB. Glad your persistance paid off. As I arrived Boz and Slowy were hitting the water and Woody was there to egg us on! Rigged up and headed out, as I was sailing out I thought I saw a flash of lightning so headed to the nearest tree stump on the edge of Creery and hung low for about 5 or 10, watched Slowy smoke the squall and Boz followed in survival mode. Hadn't seen any more lightning, must have been a rain drop I saw, so figured I should keep heading into the pond then saw another flash, this time is was less than a second to the Thunder so I found another tree stump to hide behind, meanwhile the next lightning bolt Boz could have lit a cigarette from. Eventually made it into the pond as some blue sky started to emerge. Had some good runs but still steep on the bearaways. Best run I felt liike I was in the powered up sweet spot so a bit dissappointed not to go quicker. Relieved that Boz was stuck at the usual 2 knotts faster. Richo joined in but was sabotaged by yesterdays injury. I was having fun and a few stacks waiting for the switch to the south, even trying runs on the northern bank which felt fast, just not long enough. Eventually decided to head in with Richo to switch to the mistral which I find tricky unless I'm bearing steep downwind. By the time I'd refuelled and finned the board Slowy and Boz were back and done for the day and I was a bit too knackered to head back in alone. In the mean time Boz had turned it up a few notches. Rare conditions, faster next time. Hope Pointman gets a good choock pond session in. is76, tws25, Koncept5.0 Sweeet!
Pointman (25522km): Late arvo mission to the Chook Pond. Got down there around 2:40 and the car park was empty, so looked like a solo mission. Breeze was strong, but not nuking, I estimated 25-30K, so rigged the 6.6 TR7 + 90 Kinetic Gladiator + 27 Tribal weed speed. Made my way into the pond, and I was pretty stacked heading upwind, but once I got on the run the 6.6 was OK, at least for the first hour. The WSW swing didn't happen, so the run was very broad, and I was finding myself running out of puff on the bearaway. Tried approaching the bank at a tighter angle, but that meant bearing away in the rolling chop, which was too hairy. Fin let go on one run, and I started sliding sideways at 35K, but bailed before the rail tripped. After that I stuck pretty close to the bank. A massive squall, probably 35-40K, blew through around 4:30, which was unsailable on the 6.6. I got halfway into the run, but got smashed and had to sit it out and wait for it to abate. After that it dropped, and I managed one more run, before it faded, and I had to walk most of the way out of the pond. Fun sesh, a shame the direction wasn't optimal, but I still managed a few good squirts
