7.5m koncept, 125 rocket, 30cm sww. Nice early morning sail with Stroppo, consistent easterly and topped off with a visit by the local dolphins. Pleasure to be out in such fine company. Cool

Fantastic fun at what I'm calling Lilacs, after our great accommodation in Albany, right at the launch spot.

Used the 43 with the 5.0 and started with the small 17cm weedy but changed up to the 19 woody weedy, this worked better with the 5.0.

Nice to get speed PBs in WA, think this place is WAs answer to Lake George, probably won't get wind as often. The weed is coarser and a bit more abrasive. But a lot less mud!

Albany, WA, AU

JP45sp, RSSII 5.4 Pepe speed weed 23

exhausted, there was more out there I could just not connect to the gusts. Well done to several others as you will see!

Update:

Mandurah mob 6 pbs..... fantastic. Mike your speeds are brilliant and show large sails are not essential for high speeds. Elmo your 2 and 5X are excellent and as for the alpha, now I have got to find another .025kt. Actually that is possible: did I mention I get flat water at my local? Mike looked so smooth on the run and kept going and going. Elmo was bouncing with joy with the speeds and thought he had a good alpha... pretty good mate!

Hardie just loves the flat water and flew, isn't it great having a WA flat water spot closer than shark bay.

To those who made the journey down I am really happy it paid off, the water is generally really flat and there is often wind but not often as windy as yesteray. Now you can see why my 45 and 54 speed boards have had a workout here.

It was great to have company on the water and give me others to measure my speeds against: sounds stupid but I really wanted more than 38.6 out there, 38.6 is 71.5 kmh so I know I should be happy but there was more out there. I carried on after all had seen the sense in stopping and managed another 37 which dissapointed me.... losing view of reality I suspect!

Several launch places possible PM me for info! Same goes for forecasts, often this year I have sailed 45/5.4 and 54/6.2 when the forecast has been 12 or 14 kts. it will be good to see this spot used.

If you look at my posts this year it has been rare for me to sail when Perth is working as the wind here seems to blow when Perth is still. Great reason to enjoy the delights of the Albany Highway (just don't speed folks, it is rare I do not see more than 1 police car on my weekly journey from here to Boddington).

For those who love them here is the GE image! I like them anyway ços you can see where to sail.

Albany tracks 16 3 13. Plenty of company as it was windy!

The forecast was good, the leave pass was granted, the bitch bus was fueled and loaded up, left home at 6am this morning collected the Yoyoman for DIDO Day attack on Evets Playground of Albanakystan after hearing all the "Bullshit" about how flat it was

Nice little drive down to the harbour pulled in and Holy Sheet they weren't lieing, bizare flat water and wind, who would have thunk it in WASurprised

Thought I'd have a play with the Thunder first to see what I could do with it, and sure enough it was a whole lotta funCool started out with a 35 and just kept gettig better although it did take a bit of tweaking trying to figure out best setting for flat water Super stoked to get a new PB for the Thunder of 38.58 (Realspeed 2 sec)CoolCoolCool

Went in for lunch (couple of Bananas) at around 1.30 and decided to give the 54 a go, straight up instant results with the speeds picking up, was quite surprised to find only myself out on the water at one stage as most people were in hiding for lunch, got a 39 then started picking up 40's on the dialSurprised was feeling pretty smug till Daryl rocked over and told me his numbers and then pointed out JJ had scored a mid 41SurprisedSurprised

More tweaking more good runs, started realising that there was some PB's up for offer, went chasing my 5x then got a 40.93 on the dialSurprised PB 2 sec baby yeeeeeehhhhhhhaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhh.

Even more surprising although the sail was a bit largish I'd managed to pull of a few sweet gybesSurprised which I was hoping and praying for some more PB goodness (Smug mode engaged)CoolyeeeeeehhhhhhhaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhCool

At the end of the session I was done, a couple of hard hits fluffing gybes, wrestling the sail had taken it's toll, I was feeling as old as HardieEmbarassed

Huge thanks to Evets and the Albany crew for their hospitality at this fantastic spot.

Great fun Sailing with Evets Hardz Decrep Yoyo Daryl and JJ

Congrats to all who scored some well earned PB'sCool

Thanks everyone, it was flat and windy out there, you just had to ignore despite the driving rain later on . Stroppo it was great to see several speed sailors here, normally there is just 2 of us and a few kiters at the southern end. I hope we get some strong seabreezes next year, this year has been good but this was the first strong wind. That said I have used my 6.2 or 5.4 9 times since January, would be more if I was able to sail evenings.

Hi 25, I think it was a one off, no need for you to travel to this cold and dreary locale! ;-) How did you go at Melville on Saturday? (please imaging the the icon with the tongue sticking here).

I suspect you may make the journey one day, in fact I look forward to it as I reckon there would be some WA pbs for you on the right day Coming donw in summer may be sensible when the seabreeze obliges, it was grey and rainy on Saurday. All you could look forward to would be an easy drive (very little traffic) no uncomfortable flights . No excess baggage, no airport delays, non-crowded speed run (in fact a huge area of flat water so anywhere there is a gust becomes the run, no hire care issues, the flattest water you could ask for (so good even Elmo could gybe!) and even in autumn Decrepit was warm enough in a shortie. Park beside the launch spot on a bitumen parking area with a grassy rigging area. Oh and a friendly local or two! One sailor from Saturday has said to me it is not challenging as it is so flat. And the sand bar even appears to keep out the great whites.

p.s. for those who do not follow this Elmo and I have shared some abuse for who is ahead on alphas, ELMO is currently way ahead of me and also 25 was key to me getting a pb for 2 sec 5 years ago with rigging assistance which has continued over the years, thanks again PD, you have helped keep me hooked on speed  going fast on a windsurf board.)

Thanks for the nice words guys!

Yes what a surprise 25, Albany has one of WA's top speed runs.

Here's my GE tracks.

Lilacs speed run

You can see 2 launch sites, the morning was low tide so we drove 300m South to the public launch site, where it's a bit deeper inshore.

This is also when I did the more southerly speed runs.

By lunch time the tide had come in enough to get in and out at Lilac Cottages easily, so that is the Northerly launch spot, as the tide increased the run moved North. The shorter and more raked your fin the smoother the water you could get into. I had a couple of runs, where there was no RAT TAT TAT noise from the board, only the SHHHHH sound of my wake, Fantastic!

Unfortunately it was too wet to get the camera out and take pics of the action, but here's a shot the next morning at low tide from our balcony.

Lilacs weedbank

This is a slightly telescopic view so things are a bit foreshortened. The middle of the weed bank is about halfway down the run, as the tide comes in the weed is covered and you get nice smooth water.

As an aside, the cottages are well appointed, Hardy and I stayed in #6 it sleeps 6 comfortably, (if you're not too worried about privacy) 8 at a pinch

Thanks Snides for the verificartion. I'll stick with my 5x for consistancy.

and yes, I'm the speed wierdo who doesn't appreciate truly flat waterEmbarassed

I can fully understand the desire for pursuit of the flat stuff but it doesn't get my ya ya's off as I feel like I'm not realy doing much more than balancing the rig and triming the board. Most of the time I was sailing blind with fogged up glasses (had to duck my head under water each time before a run to clear them temporarily) and the biggest problem's I had during the day was flipping the 7m sail into the right position to be able to water start.

That said this is the best place for flat water I've ever sailed (admittedly I havent sailed any of the legendary spots) glassy top, good winds and you can sail 7 & 4 oclock behind someone and there is absolutely no board wash from the other board because of the weed, that and being able to point and shoot from anywhere. Apart from the outright speed thing the potential of Alpha's is mind boggling

I did learn a lot about set up on the trip as flat water setups are a lot different to how we normally set up especially when a weedie is a necessity, next time first up I'd shift my footstraps right back to free up the board some more.

The weed is similar to Safety bay ribbon weed except its about 10-15mm wider and it's right up to and floating on the surface so a good weedie is needed, claytons weedies may struggle.

I will be back and thoroughly recommend doing the run down, The challetes which Decrep Dot and Hardz stayed in were awesome and literaly about 40m from the waters edge. I imagine when Perth troughs out next summer there will be a few vans on the way down.

Huge thanks to Steve and the Albany crew for finding and sharing such an amazing spot

Thanks to all who were down there creating such a great buzz it was fun watching everyone flying.

Congrats to all who got PB's and those who yeahared

And thanks to everyones kind words

I'll be back
