Safety Bay, WA, AU M41, tribal ws21, 4.9K

An excellent Pinnaroos turnout at Safety Bay today, with 8 of us sailing there! Thanks for the support guys, especially being midweek.

All the makings for some top speeds, almost.

Tide - perfect

Wind - strong and whistling through the trees

Sky - clear & sunny

Air density - da boing! (how do you write that sound they have on game shows that says you struck out?)

consequently we all underrigged and were never really powered up as the wind had no oomph in it.

I was really hoping for a PB today but just couldn't get past 33 knots. Speed chat was echoing my optimism by calling out 34s and 35s but they were just in my dreams. Speedchat it seems is accurate upto about 32 knots and then it becomes progressively more optimistic (Xperia phone).

Missed out on a 5X PB by less than 0.02 knots!

The guys got some good scores though and will have improved our position on the ladder, so overall I am very happy.

Thanks team!

Team speed mission, all Pinnas and Duffy the blow-in Cool

On the water at 2pm - again rigged too small as it looked nuclear, I guess we got about 22 knots with a few decent gusts.

New RRD sail - couldn't get the battens to rotate without kicking them across, Hot Rod RDM mast too stiff?

Fun day, saw Anita smash some quick runs. Craig was ripping till his mast broke and Jake looked super quick as I was leaving.

Pleasant afternoon at the bay with a few of the team. Used the CA47 mid afternoon for a few speed runs but there was not enough wind.

Changed to the Sputnik 270 and tried a few alphas and a nautical mile - much more fun. The NM was quite challenging with the 21 weed fin in the chop. :-)

CA47 - Choco Weed 22 - Tushingham Lightning 5.3 (best peak speed). 90s F2 Sputnik 270 - Makani Weed 21 (NM and Alpha)

Left about 6-40pm and Jake was still smoking down the run - go Jake!

Coodanup & Safety Bay, WA, AU

Headed down to Fangys to pick up a fin and considered it mad not to have a crack while i was there, problem was the wind refused to blow while i was thereEmbarassed Hmm could have sworn it picked up as i left. Ahh well it was nice to try out the delta 19 speed. Feels less draggy than the 21 Slalom, be good to try again in the smooth with some wind. So up to Safety Bay it was with an abundance of Pinnas rigged up ready to go. It was a little bit grindy on the teeth early on with the tide a tad low, feeling the weed brushing the fin at speed. I was having a great time until i heard a rather loud bang and found myself flat on my back in the water. Seems there wasnt too much Pride (did i spell that right) taken in the construction of this mastYell Only used it 3-4 times. Luckily i wasnt out deep but a long walk back.

Great to catch up with the crew and awesome to see Anita getting some good speed.

Oh and Jake i stayed to keep an eye on you until i saw you come in. You must eat lots of carrots, great eyesightWink

Safety Bay, WA, AU. Did the mad dash after work to try to help the team out and arrived about 4:30. Half the guys were packing up, some had already been out on the smaller kit and had their fun and had changed up :( it sadly wasn't looking as epic as forecast. Aaah well, rigged up the 6.3, plugged in the sp47 and got out there. Maybe it will come back in?

Spent a fair while (the entire session) running back and forth on the strip - super tiring stuff after 2.5 hours actually. By the end of it, I had a window of about 2 seconds after each gybe during which I needed to be back in the harness else.... When that 2 seconds was up, goodbye forearms!

Pretty happy with the numbers for the conditions I guess. Never fully lit, but the odd gusty section helped get the board moving along nicely. Would have been great 2 hours earlier (lower tide) but with 5 more knots!!! By the end, the chop at the top of strip was getting dodgy - especially when the only light was coming from the channel markers or the moon...

The NM includes a run down the strip, gybe out in the swell, a blast over the pond and another half a gybe on the other end. brutally short sailing! No idea how that hour happened?!? I jumped off the board and flipped the sail at the top of the run every single time. Maybe I should have just gybed, might have been worth a shot at a 20+, but had to save the arms.

Nice day out, but missed the team attack by an hour or so. Next time guys! Cool

Thanks, Mark. It is good to have a video of me doing a decent speed.

Sue - as long as I look fast. A decent slingshot there, once I get in the flatter water. Unfortunately the powers that be have carved a boating channel through the start of our speed strip, so just when you are getting up to speed you have to brace for the whoop de doos and then get the board settled again before bearing away. Then you have the rolling swell to slow down in!
