Coodanup, WA

Nice early morning session with a few of the lads on the pond (Woody, Ant, Slowboat, Jim). Some massive gusts came through that were just unsailable but heaps of fun blasting down the inside of the bank with the boys. Back to work now unfortunately.  Windtech 57 & 5.6 Loft Speed Blade and 20cm Stealth fin. Toes have only just thawed!  Glad you made it back home Ant after it dropped out.

Coodanup, WA, AU.  Another dawn session with Slowboat, Crimson Flash, Woody and Antman.  Slowboat showed the way again with a mad 48.57 knot run but some of the gusts were more than he could handle.  Suffice to say I yet again spent a lot of time sitting on the sidelines waiting for the brutal stuff to pass.  Then there was a 30min or so pause where the wind just died so we all got colder and colder.    On the last real run attempt following Antman in a squall the rain seemed to be a lot sharper than normal and felt like it was stripping the skin off my face, totally blinding with viz near zero so stopped mid run.  Turns out it was hail..nasty little stuff with nice sharp edges.  Then the wind died again so called it.  Once back in warm clothes the wind kicked back in more steadily and Canonball and Decrepit rigged to go enjoy.    5.7 RRD move, 104 RRD FSW, 33TWS

An early cold start with Antman, Slowy, Crimsonflash and Flex. Big squals and at times good direction but to find the combination today. Hats off to Slowy on a 48.56 3rd fastest 2sec. See the video for some footage. Always a pleasure sharing the stoke with great guys. JP50 evo12 5.8 wp23

Short sail, long wade. Good to see the early birds come in off the water when I first arrived so I took the time to set up some foot straps, chatted to decrepit and had some lunch hoping some other windsurfers would roll up, they didn't but I perseveered because how often do we get wind as strong as we wish.

Felt like I'd forgotten how to sail. Might have been better off on a more familiar board then again, the mistral felt pretty good bearing away leading into the slightly bumpier stuff. Struggled on the approach to the smooth, often sliding sideways on the approach. Still happy to have made the adventure, and it's not often I get over 35. Summer is coming, in the mean time the ice washed from the gutters is still defrosting on the back lawn.

First blast on the mistral 91. KA Kocept5.8, 27cm weedy.

Nice PBs Jim.

Well Cannonball rigged, but I watched a 30kt squall come through that lasted a few minutes then a long 15kt lull, not knowing what to rig, I came home and left cannonball to it.

It looks like conditions were very good for going fast and go fast happened!  Well done all you Spartans.  Especially well done to Flex for persistance and enthusiasm and to Chris Lockwood for being Chris Lockwood (even though he sails for another team).   It's staggering how he manages to be so exceptionally quick in such testing conditions.

Well done dawn patrol! Not a whole lot of smooth sailing on offer so respectable scores all round.

So close to a PB Dan! Jim, you just keep going faster and faster. Ant your right on the toes of the forties and Woody, awesome speed once again.

Thanks for the video Mark. I can really relate to making a meal of the gusts, repeatedly.

Sorry to abandon you Ben. In hindsight since I was on bigger board I should have tried to sail the lulls to stay warm as the brutal stuff was relatively short lived (and can always throw yourself at it to keep working).  That or take a large themos of hot water to pour down my wetsuit/drink hot fluids to survive these long lulls.  If I'd stayed warm I would have kept going and been company for you...maybe have to invest in a second wetsuit...or new sail, fin, board...bloody hell, never ends.

Good video Mark, they are getting more entertaining...keep it up.  I just took one Gopro today determined just to sail only take epic shots...of course there were many epic moments (I can't think of a single Coodanup trip that hasn't been epic or entertaining).   I turned mine on at some epic point and it was dead despite charging it all night.  Turns out a flakey battery connection coupled with having voice control on (which obviously is useless in the pond) was the cause, but hard to trouble shoot in the conditions.  The most epic shot that was missed for today was Slowy doing the somehow in control flappy/bouncy 45+ knot run inside a rainbow (which probably would have taken me out if he was mortal like the rest of us).

Sure was fun though sailing with you all.  Can't believe I waited till I was 50 to take this sport up.

Good times today guys. Brutal squalls and not a lot in between. Nice one on the PBs Jim! Thanks for taking in cameras you guys- and Mark for the vid. Nice to have some memories of such days. Good to catch up with you all... like groundhog day from last week. Did you guys feel you were wasting the wind this afternoon??? If it wasn't so damn cold in the water. I do like to feel when I'm stepping on rocks in bare feet... not today!
