Lilacs, Albany. Mistral 95, SV M2 7.0, Tribal Delta 18

Just went for a couple of trips down the Nauti run today as had to head home early. Hard work getting to the top of the nauti course with the 7.0 metre, but well worth it once on the run. Breeze is going off now, should be some fast speeds later.

Geez another good day. Strop was cranking today

Wind dropped away in the afternoon for a while so called it.

A trip to Albany is always epic and this one was no different. A great gathering of like minded nutcases. Arrived on day 3 expecting a low tide and good wind, but was greeted by a highish Tide and mid 20’s. Many out already so went with the 6.4m and small slalom which felt like the right combination. Went straight to the NM start and sent it fully powered but no speed? Realised the mast track was still fwd of ctr. Did another run but this time was getting lifted as the wind picked up a gear, so came back to change down. Rigged the 5.8m and slapped the speedboard in and made for the NM start, but this time packing 5kg of lead. First run was underpowered wtf, second run barely made it back down the run with some big lulls. Grovelled back to the carpark and called it a day. Some very happy “days” chappies but an awesome vibe amongst the crew. Look forward to the next speed carnival. SB i87/w49, Evo 6.4/ 5.8, Tribal delta 16

Albany, WA, AU 5m Koncept, 54 Manta 16 tribal delta wind was a consisten 24 kn when I measured it after packing up but I think it had droppd off by then. Before starting it was 20 -22kn

It was windier today so I went with the same sail as yesterday (not enough power yesterday) and added some extra downhaul. I felt inspired to try the Manta today, so I plugged that in. I tired a couple of speed runs to get the mast foot placement right and then headed up to the top of the nautical mile run. I waited at the top for some others to follow and almost got munched by a crab. To be honest I almost sat on him, so I can't blame him for retaliating. He was a good sized one and I was tempted to grab him but it would have been very uncomfortable with him tucked into my harness for the nauti run.

I headed off on the run after Tim. For once my phone was working and was calling out 33, 33, 33 for a long time and I was getting optimistic for a good result, then I hit a long choppy section and I had to sheet out and couldn't keep the sail locked down. 31, 30, 28... oh no! Just as my legs were giving out I hit the smooth again and the speed quickly went back up to a consistent 33. I managed to hold on until the very end of the run and was pleased to see a 30.9 on the phone. I felt I should do another run staying closer to the weedbank to get more of the smooth but my legs were like jelly ( I don't usually sail two days in a row) and the wind picked up so much I could hardly hold the sail down. I tried a couple of speed runs and couldn't really send it so I decided another naughty run would be a very risky proposition and called it a day.

I can see this spot has plenty of potential but getting the best nm is not as straightforward as you would think. A degree of local knowledge and experience is essential to getting the best result.

Lilacs, Albany WA

Absolutely fabulous couple of days down at Lilacs with a bunch of enthusiatic speedsters! Pinnas, Mandurah Mob, Busso crew. Feeling quite knackered now after the drive back to Perth. Was on the WindTech 57 with 6.3 Loft most of the day and jumped to the old (but still good) 1992 WindTech 920 Pro Race. Good to catch up with all the crew - magic couple of days!  Another NM PB to add to the growing pile!  Laughing
